Rookie Ladder?

Post by mjs34 »

Has anyone looked at this before, because there is clearly no logic involved whatsoever.

I am dumbfounded how they have Wiggins at 5th. Wiggins weakness is considered to be his offense, but he is just as efficient and putting up similar or better numbers than everyone above him. Then take into account his defense, and he should be leading by a huge margin IMO (biased?, maybe).

Thorpe has Wiggin's ranked 8th and LaVine 15th.

It is early. This will change a lot.

I've been following kj McDaniels since last year and wish we had found a way to get him. Wiggins and him at the 2 and 3 would've been a terror on the defensive end for years. In regards to the article I believe Wiggins should be # 4 or 5. Those above him have more opportunity to be the man or 2nd man on their teams. I never thought Wiggins would be ROY here or at Cleveland. He projects as a superb #2 guy ala pippen IMO beginning next year. I expect rubio, lavine, Wiggins at 1,2,3 next year to take the league by storm.

It is early, but what is it that I'm not seeing so far that puts these other guys above wiggins?

Doesn't having more opportunity to be the man suggest their numbers should be higher?

It's early in the season, and Wiggins seems to be learning on the job quickly, so I still expect him to top these rankings in a couple weeks. His numbers are already better than Parker: 11.3 and 3.4 RPG on 47% shooting for Wiggins, 10.3 and 5.6 on 42% for Parker. And who contributes more on defense? Exum is my dark horse because at some point Utah has to realize that Troy Burke is shooting 33% from the field and starts giving his PG minutes to Exum. But I still think Wiggins beats him out.

I'm trying not to write a snarky comment about how Trey Burke isn't amazing. I guess I really wasn't able to stop myself.

Wiggins keeps improving every game imo. I haven't seen most of the guys on the list but I'm really happy with Wiggins right now I don't care much about what other rookies are doing. It does seem odd to me that he isn't higher though

The Thorpe article came off like it was a detriment that Wiggins was already defending the opposing team's best perimeter player. He has been good against them, but it's not like he has shut anyone down. I think Thorpe counted that against him when that should be a huge plus. He's also been pretty efficient scoring the ball. His biggest detriment to me right now is that he's not doing much to stuff the stat sheet. He needs to be at 15/5/3 with a steal or a block per game to get some serious consideration. MCW won it last year going like 18/6/6 albeit inefficiently. While he was on a bad team that is still pretty solid production.

No one here really is distinguishing themselves from the pack, so it's tough to rank order this class with any clarity.

As much as I love Wiggins potential and athleticism, I am concerned a bit with his aggressiveness. I dont think he deserves any top billing. I want to see him use his athleticism more to go after blocks and contest shots, especially on help defense. His demeanor being so calm and quiet frankly scares the hell out of me. I want a gamer. Guy that plays with his heart on his sleeve. In no way am I writing him off from being a great player someday, I see a lot of things that are cause for concern. I want to see him get more after it on the defensive end. 1 block, 1 assist, and 1 steal in the last three games. You are young and you need to be active out there. For me his intensity has left much to be desired. That being said the jump shot is looking pretty damn nice, much better than I expected. I know hes young, but I really want to see some more fire out of him.

Have you watched him this season? He's the most consistent defender on the team. Blocks and steals aren't the only part of defense. He has been making life difficult for some of the best players in the game and he is only 19. Defense is usually a skill that takes years to master and he is already a really good on ball defender. The fact is that rookies don't just take over teams a month into the season in terms of aggression. How many players in the league take the top billing on defense and also proceed to be a top offensive player on their team as well? Now narrow that down to how many 19 year olds have done that in this league. We have two starters in Martin and Pek who have zero value on the defensive end so if we don't get them going on offense they are huge negatives to our team's ability to win. Add in that Thad has been pretty solid this year as well and Wiggins should only be counted on as a fourth scoring option on most nights which he happens to be 4th on our team in scoring currently. He does need to stuff the stat sheet a little more, but I don't get why his motor is so often questioned when all you have to do is watch him D up the Harden's and Wade's of the world to see he has the motor to be a great player in this league. His battle with Joe Johnson was great, he just was fighting in the wrong weight class that night to be able to fully shut him down. Rookie of the year goes to guys who fill the offensive stat sheet so his man defense doesn't get the credit it deserves when it comes to handing out awards. I think the activity will come as the team starts to form around him and Ricky as guys like Martin and Pek leave. That is when he will truly be a top part of the offense and with that responsibility will come further aggression. Right now he is a rookie playing next to 4 veterans (when we are healthy). I'm not surprised he isn't trying to take over offensively.
