New Sam Mitchell

Post by bleedspeed »

Reading this article sure made me think Flip found a new Sam Mitchell to mentor the kids. Glad to have Young on our team.

Terrific article about Young...easy to see why he was a fan favorite in Philly. He is truly a professional in every sense of the word, and even at his young age, a great role model for our young guys. And to think Flip got him for two players that were not in his plans...genius. I don't know, of course, but I suspect that he will not be just a one-year rental. I think he will see that flip is building something good here, and will be content to return at a lower salary.

All that said, I am hoping that Thad finds himself behind AB within a month. Even some of his biggest Philly supporters on RealGM saw his ideal role as an energy PF off the bench. If he ends up playing more minutes than Bennett, the Wolves are going to struggle with rebounding and interior defense. I still don't understand why his rebounding is so poor. I focused on him in the one game I have seen him live (Indiana) and unfortunately learned nothing because he had his only good rebounding game of the preseason (6 boards in only 23 minutes).

But regardless of whether he starts or comes off the bench, bringing him in was a great move by Flip.

LST - I agree. I think Bennett is a special talent. Young would be a great backup to both Wiggins and Bennett. I am not sure what he is worth, but I hope he doesn't opt out next year.

And remember what Chad Ford said...getting Thad Young won't matter, the Wolves will be AWFUL either way. I hope Flip prints that tweet and puts it in the locker room.

The best part about it is that this Sam Mitchell may be able to hit an open jumper.

I did like the Vogel quote, I think Vogel is showing a coaches insight to our squad. I think we get hung about about media coverage, but it seems that a lot of coaches and former coaches like the direction of this team. Perhaps coaches may not make the best GMs but I think what is clear is that Flip is building a team that is coachable. Players that can be molded into roles rather than players that are set in their ways. I am excited for the next 3 years. I think we will be pleasantly surprised this year and will be looking at the playoffs again sooner than most thought when we lost Love.

Thad Young seems to be loyal like KG I don't think he is a guy that leaves a team via FA unless basically forced to do so. I would say if there is some sort of reasonable role for him he will stay around. If there isn't a role well wow 2 young guys including Bennett will have really stepped up to make that happen so that would be ok with me.

This team on defense reminds me of some guys I went to high school with that were all in the same class and some of them basically grew up together. They were all good players but there wasn't much difference in height the tallest guy was maybe 6'2". They could fly all over creating turnovers because of their speed nd instincts playing together. They played in some fun church tourny over in England against a good team with 2 brothers that were 6'7" and won easily. I wasn't surprised. Thad's ability on defense is incredibly rare at the PF spot. Its basically like having a bigger stronger Brewer playing there. This team is gonna create a ton of turnovers. Will that make up for other problems? Idk but its gonna help. Wiggins is a rookie and can use some more strength but if he switches onto anyone other than a C he will probably be ok. Thad can switch onto almost anyone and have a shot. Rubio can handle perimeter players and Martin...well hopefully he tries harder. Its gonna be maddening to watch but also fun as hell. Lol

I wonder how long Flip coaches this team. I could see him being open in the spring to a coach if they fit.

I do think the advantage of how Flip has constructed the roster is that it would interest coaches. I wouldn't mind him stepping aside but I always liked Flip's coaching. I say keep it going until it is a total disaster.
