The Love-Wiggins Deal Thread

I'm becoming more and more intrigued with the Bulls offer. I'd still take the Cavs offer for the reasons Lip outlined and they could take on more contracts in return (along with give more draft picks), but I happen to think McDermott is going to be pretty good (Wally-like, perhaps better), Taj is a solid player who gives us a defensive presence at the 4, and Mirotic...I'll be honest, I don't know much about him but he's hyped pretty good and you know how we love the unknown.

So Wiggins versus Butler, Gibson, and McDermott/Mirotic gives us a better chance to be a contender? Remember - Dieng, LaVine, Rubio, and Pek are most likely going no where, so they are still on our roster under either scenario. You are basically saying that Wiggins is > than two very good veteran players + a very good rookie prospect with a more refined game (currently) than Wiggins.

By the way, I think in the end we end up with Wiggins. I think Chicago is perfectly happy with their roster as-is, so this is all just a hypothetical debate.

Q, I think Chicago is making the offer as much to keep Love out of Cleveland as anything else. Love on Cleveland represents the #1 seed in the East...while Love not in Cleveland means that the Bulls have as good of chance as anyone in the East.

The Cavs trade gives them a base of young, extremely athletic players who even if they don't reach 100% of the potential should be very good players. It's a base around which to build which also offers the better possibility for star quality players. I just don't see how getting two defensive minded players with little offense and two offensive minded players with little defense is going to serve the Wolves long term.

I also like keeping their options open, which having young players on rookie contracts will do. They will be in position to make moves that could even involve trading those young players for proven talent as the team matures.

Bottom line Q, I just have zero interest in more mediocrity and that's all I see coming from the GSW and CB trades. I guess you could say hope that ultimately goes unfulfilled is better than being resolved to being at best bottom seed fodder.

Q and drew, we just have to agree to disagree with this.

Getting proven role players is good if you have a star on your team. Getting a bunch of them to play with a bunch of other role players and you produced a underdog team that will compete for the 9th-10th slot. I dont want that.

Yes, I understand that people will be skeptical of wiggins reaching his full potential but do you see wiggins being just equal or worse than butler, gibson, mirotic or mubuckets? Clearly I dont and I see him being better than all of them and has a much higher ceiling.

The thing is, its much easier to find the next butler, gibson etc. You have to draft right to find them. But getting a wiggins who has the talent and tools to be an all star caliber player and someone who will excite the fanbase, thats much harder and a no brainer choice for me.

I'll roll the dice on Wiggins becoming a star. We (Minnesota) don't get a chance at them too often. We could realistically find guys like Gibson, Butler and McDermott every year, to be honest. For all we know Flip already did with Dieng and Robinson III; time will tell. But it's not every year we can acquire the top pick in the draft and a guy with a ceiling as high as Wiggins'. I'm as skeptical as anybody on Wiggins, but when you trade a star, if you can get a chance at another star, you take it.

At least two of those contracts have to be guaranteed on August 1, which means that if Wiggins signs, the unguaranteed contracts become worthless in the deal. I think you will likely see a deal on Thursday, or at the very least, Wiggins contract signing will be postponed again.
