The Love-Wiggins Deal Thread

LeBron hasn't talked to Wiggins ONCE since he was drafted. Hmm. That's quite telling.

Funny how Love was an asshole for not talking to Lavine, but Lebron gets a pass for Wiggins. LOVE BIAS!!

There are some differences here. First, Love and LaVine are both UCLA alumni, and alumni usually look out for each other. Secondly, LeBron probably didn't reach out to Wiggins because he assumed they would never be teammates, because he assumed that Wiggins was being dealt. Love didn't reach out to LaVine because he had quit on his team and didn't consider himself a T-Wolf anymore.

Vastly different situations. And yes, Love is an asshole...LeBron is not.

It actually sounds like very similar situations. Both guys figured they wouldn't be playing on the same team at the start of the season. I never considered Love an asshole for that. Just thought it showed his thought process and intentions moving forward.

I consider Love an asshole for making it sound like he was giving the wolves the three years of his deal to make the PO's and show that they would be a competitive team, only to let Flip go all in last season, and then tell him he is planning on bolting at seasons end.

Don't even bring the contract situation into this. He was willing to sign for the full 5 years and our management turned him down. That is 100% on them. All Love has done is start the clock when everyone else starts the clock which is the year before free agency. At least he's giving Flip a chance to get multiple quality assets before he leaves for nothing. We were capped out last season so we weren't going to be able it add much to that non-playoff team. Do you really think Lavine/GR3/Mo is enough to make last years team a playoff team? They don't solve any of our defensive problems and only fix some of our offensive problems. I'd like to hear from all the ESPN posters that were on the side of the shorter deal to make management have to put a winner on the floor sooner. That sure came back to bite us in the ass. It sure would be nice to have him locked down for a full 3 more years than having to deal him now. For everyone thinking he would demand a trade, Flip and Glenn wouldn't have cared and told him to get his ass to camp. They were trying to hold on to him this off-season when he could leave in a year versus knowing you have him for 3 more years.

He signed Martin to a 4 year deal, and Bud and Brewer to 3 year deals, using all of our cap space in the process.

So he would of saved our cap space for this year for what? Who could of we got this year for better deals with that cap space?

We will never know what kind of deals might have been available to us. Maybe a Shawn Marion, or Vince Carter from Dallas.

What we do know is that he is now trying to unload guys like Martin and Bud, which means we shouldn't have signed them. Due to Adleman and Love's demands, we the jumped the gun on our rebuilding plan filling in role guys before we had enough young talent on our squad. Now we are trying to right that by dumping those same role players a year or two later.

Not sure how it was because of Love and Adelmans "demands". Were we not suppose to make a playoff run with the Rubio/Love/Pek core? Don't know how Marion or Carter would be much improvements over what we have now.

Yea Love wants out because the Wolves didn't make the playoffs last year. He did his part though, maybe Flip could of made some better signings, maybe the west was just too tough, maybe the damage had already been done.

Did Durant/Westbrook/Wall/Rose have opt-outs for their 5 year deals of which Love would have basically had a replica of? No? That's how I know. The opt-out was given to him as a concession for not giving him the full 5 years.

I was one of the ones that did not have a problem with the 4-deal with an opt-out (although I preferred a 5-year deal). And my main reason was this: if we don't make the playoffs in 3 years, then it's probably time to go a different direction anyway.

And whatever the excuses are for why we didn't make the playoffs, we are now forced to go a different direction. I don't blame Love one bit for leaving, although my opinion of him has changed a bit. I like Love and wanted him to stay. Call it skill or call it luck, Flip is impressing the hell out of me with how he is retooling this team!

Whether Love signed a five or one year deal doesn't matter. He stated two years ago that re-signing would be dependent on whether the wolves were making the PO's and being a contender. Now he requests a trade, stating that he won't re-sign at the end of the year. Going to Flip and saying that it was PO's or bust, would have been one thing, but he didn't give Flip the second of the two year window to make a the PO's. I have always believed that this was his plan all along, and regardless of how the wolves were doing, he would be looking to jump ship.

Say what you want about Love's right to leave, or he felt disrespected, but the truth is that Love came into camp out of shape two years ago, then broke his hand trying to make up for it. That was the first season of his new deal, and he was already crying to the media.

I'm not a fan of David Kahn at all, but I also didn't have a problem with the deal he offered Love. We all focus on the flexibility it gave to Kevin, but perhaps Kahn was focusing more on the flexibility the deal provided the Wolves. At the time they entered into the contract, it was clear that Love had elite scoring and rebounding skills. But he also hadn't proven that he could lead a team, was not a great defender, and just months before his coach had made terribly critical comments about him. Kahn was understandably concerned about committing to Love for 5 years, and knew that he would be able to pay Kevin more money than any other team at the end of the 3 (or 4) years. And as Tim said, if we weren't winning after 3 years, it was time to look at other options.

Kahn made a lot of bonehead moves during his tenure, but thank god we aren't committed to a disgruntled Kevin Love for another 2 years.

Yeah, thank god we don't have a top-10 player in the NBA for at least another year to build around him, or at least have him under contract longer so his trade value was higher. That would have been completely awful. Luckily we had Kahn to save us from that horrible situation. :dizzy:
