Brady Heslip
The Wolves have signed him to a training camp deal. Interesting move, because including GR3 they currently already have 16 bodies ready to go in Mankato...certainly more than enough. So they must really be looking at this guy. I have to admit I'm a little intrigued, based on his shooting in college and Summer League. But let's not kid ourselves about Brady...he is a shooter and nothing else. It's hard to believe a guy like this never averaged more than 1 assist per game in his three years at Baylor! And he's a little annoying too with his 3-point goggles routine.
But you can't ignore the fact that he can flat out shoot. 44% on threes in his 3 years at Baylor, and an incredible 46.5% his final year. And he displayed a quick release and ability to use screens in Summer League where he scored 31 points his last 2 games (in only 48 minutes) while hitting 7 out of 10 threes. It's not inconceivable to me that he could make the final roster as exclusively a 3-point specialist, because the way the roster is currently configured, we are likely to struggle beyond the arc. I had some hope for Hummel in this role, but he has not shown the long distance shooting ability he showed in college. GR3 has ten times Heslip's athletic ability, but he doesn't help us much with long-distance shooting and in many ways is redundant to others on the roster.
The 3-point specialist is a role many good NBA teams have filled, and I'd like to see the Wolves have one too. There may not be many better options out there than him. I don't know, why do you guys think the Wolves signed him to a training camp contract if they weren't interested?

Re: Brady Heslip
Teams do this all the time. The contract is likely unguaranteed unless he makes the squad.

I remember every time he played my school Iowa State last year... He killed us behind the arch. He always bugged the crap out of me, but I wouldn't mind him being our Robbie Hummel, and that's the problem... we already have Hummel.

Re: Brady Heslip
The truth is that neither Hummel nor Heslip should be on the 15-man roster.
Re: Brady Heslip
Its an invite he makes some money and if he blows them out of the water maybe he makes the team or maybe they can send him to the D-league with one of those training camp cut spots or whatever. Could he make the team? He can probably bring the ball up and not screw up much as a PG and the dude can flat out shoot the 3 ball and the wolves need that more than anything right now. Heck Rubio is like the 4th best 3 point shooter on the team right now...yeah that's bad. If they find a spot for JJ or just get rid of him GR3 doesn't look ready so they can keep him via the D-league route and Brady is lights out then maybe he makes the roster. Its not likely but I'd rather have him than say AJ Price since there is some small glimmer of potential Brady can be more useful. I know that's not saying much. Besides you need some camp bodies they sign guys every year.
Re: Brady Heslip
Buy out Hummel and trade Barea to a team below the cap for a second round pick. Then sign GRIII and Heslip. I'm still thinking we'll end up keeping JJ and I doubt Flip would buy out Hummel. But I'd love to know what Flip really has in mind.
Re: Brady Heslip
I take back what I said Heslip is an absolute longshot to make the roster. He does 1 thing well shoot 3's and that's it. He averaged less than 1 assist a game in college. His 2 point FG% is sad. He doesn't turn the ball over and that good. I think a lot of us saw his struggles against SL PGs on defense. He is training camp fodder that's it. Also the guy is 24. With that shot he won't have a hard time finding work as a basketball player somewhere.

Funny. Had you not included Heslip's name in the beginning of the post, this sounded a lot like Hummel. As I said previously, neither should be on the 15-man roster. There is better talent practically everywhere.
Re: Brady Heslip
Every team needs a guy who can come in during garbage time and hit a 3pt that makes absolutely no difference to the outcome of the game. Hummel and Heslip are ideal candidates.

Lol.
