Look to draft a PG to replace Rubio next year?

I wouldn't sign Rubio this offseason. Clearly he wants max money. Let's just say the Wolves come out and are really bad. A high draft pick looks likely. Since you look set at wings and C (for now), would you take a PG and let Rubio walk?

On the flip side, If the Wolves are next years surprise team, you just give Rubio his max or close to and everyones happy.

This draft is going to be weak at PG. Also I think there is a chance that LaVine's best position is PG. He looked comfortable there this year.

I agree. Why would anyone pay anyone the max before the RFA period? Unless they are a clearcut Allstar/MVP. It is in Rubio's best interest to sign an extension. Not the Wolves. He could blow out a knee again and his value could drop. We can match anyone next year so why sign him to anything more then a reasonable contract of 10-12M.

Assuming the Wolves are lottery bound, it'd be nice if for once we caught some luck. A top-three pick could get us Emmanuel Mudiay. (tongue falls out at the thought of Mudiay/LaVine/Wiggins)

I think you take BPA regardless of position and worry about fit later. I think our young guys with the exception of Ricky all have the ability to play multiple positions because of their measurables and athleticism.

Lavine - either guard spot
Bennett - probably best suited as a sixth man scoring punch off the bench for a few years so I wouldn't leave a better player on the board if PF was clearly the best available.

Also, drafting a PG shouldn't be the end of Ricky for sure either because Ricky might not get that big of an offer which at that point you retain Ricky and have the ability to move either if needed. Building a good team is about giving yourself options so it doesn't make sense for a team in our position to close any doors because of our existing roster.

There are more question marks, and reasons for excitement, going into this season than any in recent history. As a result, our draft needs may be entirely different in June than how we look at them now. I think the Vegas line for the Wolves of about 27 wins is a good prediction right now, and barring something unusual in the lottery, that will give us a pick around #5. You guys are right...next year's draft appears to be loaded with high quality PF's. But I'm a lot more optimistic about this position than most, and think it may even look like a strength by the end of the year, with Young and Bennett both showing ability to be starting NBA PF's. I'm also more positive about Rubio than many, and with Williams and LaVine backing him up, I don't expect that PG will be a priority in the draft next year either.

Somehow, I think we may be looking at taking another SG with the 5th pick. There is a lot of discussion about whether Wiggins is a SF or a SG, and I think he is going to be our starting SF for a long time. And Kevin Martin will either be gone or in his last year with the Wolves. LaVine has a chance to be our SG of the future, but he may turn out to be a PG too. So, my best guess is that we will be looking for a SG with our first pick. Too early to start throwing out names, but we will likely have some great options.
