I'm having a difficult time mustering any excitement about the Penberthy hiring. I wonder how much success he has had coaching NBA players. Cam mentioned that he has worked with George, Wade, Iggy and Irving. I checked each of their shooting percentages over the past three years...George and Irving got worse, Wade and Iggy got better. Pretty inconclusive.
Does anyone know when he worked with a certain player? It would be helpful to see that his coaching resulted in improved shooting by a client. Absent that, it's difficult for me to conclude that this hiring is going to have any impact.

Rubio and a post game? Might as well work with Pek on his 3 point shooting

Can it get worse for Rubio? The main thing that I want to see with Rubio is just that he isn't lazy on his form both when taking midrange jumpers and drives to the lane. I think any shooting coach could help him with this. If he shows better focus and still misses, oh well. But at least he wont be taking those giveaway shots, especially on drives when he just randomly throws up scoop layups that get easily blocked or missed by a mile. Even cutting down on these would help his% a bit because I count at least one shot a game that just seems to be a giveaway.

Sorry I sent you to the wrong place Bleed. I'll try and find link
Re: Rubio meet Mike Penberthy
Rubio looked pretty darn young today, clean shaven and all...
Re: Rubio meet Mike Penberthy
Regarding Rubio and a "post up" game, I can kinda see something like Sam Cassell's back to the basket game.
Re: Rubio meet Mike Penberthy
I find it amusing that LST's optimism about this team seems to reach his limit with adding a shooting coach. Lol Lots of fans and posters here have suggested a shooting coach for years. Will it help? Maybe not but it seems like its at least something you can say "The organization is doing everything it can to become better" type thing. Cuban pays like 40 assistant coaches or whatever there is no reason why we can't pay a guy that specializes in helping guys with their shot. I think the fact that some very good NBA players have worked with him says enough about his reputation that he must be at least fairly legit.
We have a lot of young players and I'm sure they can all use help with their shot. What if he figures out some small thing that helps make Robbie Hummel nail open jumpers at a very high clip? This isn't just about Rubio lots of guys can use some help with their shot.
I know people are trying to judge on whatever they can find on the guy but who gives a poop what Penberthy's fg% was when he played? There are NBA coaches that didn't even play in the league. What level of college ball did Spolstra play? Remember that placekicking kicking coach that's in a wheelchair? Some guys can coach/teach things its a talent. One of my teachers in HS was amazing at that. Math, Science, Computers, Cars, Basketball (probably could teach just about anything) he had a gift of being able to explain things and people understood. It was almost like magic. He also had a fantastic sense of humor which helped him relate to us both in the classroom and in other activities outside of class. (There could be a long rant here about how teachering talent should absolutely be recruited more than top athletes...oh remember that guy that played linebacker for the Bengals? He is just a teacher now... Sad but that's how its looked at buy society and I've been guity of it also) My point with Penberthy is let's just see if he can do something. I'm not expecting magic shooting is unbelievably complex there is a myriad of factors that go into what you need to do to be successful.
I'll say one more thing about Rubio's shot is that healthy has hurt his ability to work on it over the past few years. I believe it was the year he was drafted he had a wrist injury that affected his shot. 2 years later he got to the NBA was playing well and blew out his knee. Last year was his first totally healthy year in the league. If Rubio is going to have a jumpshot instead of a set shot maybe now he has the base to do it. Personally if I was Rubio's shooting coach I would change a lot of the way he takes his shot to make it more fluid. I'll be interested to see what he looks like this season. I generally don't like guys to change their shots drastically but with Rubio as I said in another thread has a set jump and that's just not good enough for a guy who is a primary ball handler.
