So what will our cap space look like next summer once we do the QO for Rubio?
he's night and day when it comes to a defender.
It depends on the cap going up, but they probably won't have a ton depending on what they do with thad.
You gotta understand though, in the landscape of the NBA, yea Bledsoe isn't worth the max. When it comes to the Wolves and FA though, Bledose is about the best level of talent that would sign with the Wolves. Even then it's going to have to be the max. So yes signing Bledsoe to the max wouldn't be an overpay
I tend to agree with this take provided Bledsoe is a good fit. And I think he is, provided the plan is to keep Rubio as well.
Rubio isn't going anywhere, neither is Wiggins or Dieng. I don't doubt that the names that have been talked about are Pekovic, LaVine, Brewer, Martin, and the $6 mil trade exception. I'm sure Flip would prefer to keep LaVine but I don't think he's untouchable. I have no idea where the "LaVine shows leadership traits" comes from...He's twig skinny, he was a backup on his college team, he's 19 years old...Being athletic and having potential is not leadership. Corey Brewer had tons of potential too in the NBA, even though he was older when he joined the NBA.
Additionally, Bledsoe fits better with Rubio than without...
I think Flip would like to replicate what Golden State has in their backcourt. Steph Curry is NOT a good defender, yet they play good team defense...why? Because they have wing defenders who can mask Curry's deficiencies and match up with other positions, including the point. Rubio's defense is far from lockdown, but he isn't a bad defender overall.. Why? Because his man-defense isn't very good, but his help defense and his ability to play the passing lanes (and rebound) are borderline elite. Having an off-guard who can guard the point and allow Ricky to play to his strengths would be a big benefit to this team.
Is Bledsoe worth the money? Arguable...but I think his addition could bring value beyond just his own play/position by allowing Flip lots of flexibility in his backcourt.
Sjm brings up a good point. Dragic-bledsoe worked so well because both can score, shoot and create.
Their roles on offense are interchangable and both are scoring guards. Rubio is a passing pg. Bledsoe playing with him will make bledsoe focus on scoring and play off the ball mostly. Might not be a good use of bledsoe. If you play rubio off the ball then you really limit his impact as well. It can work but it wont work as well as dragic-bledsoe or even curry-ellis.
I was unsure about this but after a day, im on the camp of just keeping rubio and give him the keys to the offense. I like bledsoe but i like rubio more and ideally they are not a great pairing. It can work but not as good as we wanted.

World I don't understand. Why wouldn't Rubio - Bledsoe be a good pairing? Ricky can be the elite setup guy that he is, and Bledsoe can focus on scoring while adding a second capable ball handler.

Bledsoe's one of the best iso players in basketball. Best at creating off the dribble. Not a great shooter by any means. Undersized to be a SG. I can see where the caution comes from.

Maybe so, but he's not a good enough playmaker to play exclusively 1. I still don't see why he and Rubio couldn't be dynamic. There are plenty of possessions to go around.
Cool. My doubt is whether rubio and bledsoe can be an elite and great pairing, which i dont think they can be. A good pairing, yes. But it wont be as good as dragic/bledsoe or even curry/ellis. If they are going to be the highest paid pair on the team, i would want them to be a elite pair which i dont see.
Bledsoe is a scoring pg. He is more like a tony parker, he can score but he is also an effective pg and distributor. He and dragic were great together because both can score the ball and its hard for the d to concentrate on 1 as the other is just as dangerous offensively as the other. Rubio meanwhile is not a good scorer and off the ball threat. The pairing can work and is good but its not going to be great/elite.
The starting lineup looks really intriguing defensively, as Bledsoe-Rubio-Young are Top 10 ball hawks. Check out their Per 36 Minute steal numbers from last season:
And then there is Corey Brewer off the bench. This team would easily lead the league in steals and generate a great deal of their offense on the fast break. Fun and exciting indeed. But they would struggle with half-court offense.
I think we can stop thinking how this would work. I just don't see it happening. If I am the Suns's I would want Dieng, LaVine, and Martin for him. That doesn't work for us. Maybe they have interest in Shabazz after he worked them over last year.
