He mentioned the numbers from a basketball operations perspective not including local TV deals and stadium revenue from non-basketball activities. Brooklyn lost 144 million dollars this year just from an operational standpoint. 9 teams lost money on basketball activities. I'm tired of hearing players complaining about the money. They're getting paid millions to play a game. Even the guys making the minimum salary make CEO money. Why should basketball be any different than any other business in the world? If the reason is because it's employees are a bunch of babies who can't feed their families for 8 million a year because of how much their owner makes, then I have a problem with where they are coming from. If the big 3 breaks up because they can't afford to pay the big 3 and bring in the pieces needed to win another title, then hasn't the CBA done it's job to prevent a super team from continuing to exist?

They're getting paid millions to play a game

Ugh I hate that saying. They are paid for so much more of a reason then to play a game. You can say doctors should be paid more because they do something meaningful. That's not exactly how our economy works.

Millions of people spend billions of dollars to go watch players in stadiums or on tv. They spend millions on products, have countless websites and boards (like this one) talking about them daily. They are huge parts of the community, being involved in charities, being on billboards, among other things.

There are a HELL of a lot of less people who could make it to the NBA then becoming a doctor. There's only 450 of those jobs in the world. And those people are SOLEY responsible for the billions of dollars the NBA is making (and it's only going up) Nobody pays money to see the owners.

The fact the players are paid millions in a multi billion dollar industry is absurd. They are underpaid

Do you think he realizes how much money the nets lost last season trying to stack a team?

Do you think he understands that players taking less to stack teams is undercutting the spirit of competition in the league?

Lebron is crying because the stacked team he created didn't win its' third title in four seasons so he might take his ball and go somewhere else. What a bunch of pussies we now have representing the NBA.

Hey Jared, let me know when you pony up $500 mil to own a franchise to make $10 mil a year!

Do you expect your investments to go up in value?

To be fair, the owners make quite a bit each year. It's not all in cash, but I would say even Prokhorov has made money on the Nets with the way franchise values have climbed.

That said, I agree that guys like Dudley would be making the minimum if it weren't for the player max.

That thinking isn't being fair. With the exception of the clippers, most of these franchises aren't returning any more on investments than if the owners put their money in other vehicles. More importantly is the fact that they can lose money as well.

Most of these owners are active in their teams in one respect or another. Shouldn't they be paid for that time? What happens when some of the owners lose money like Taylor? I don't see Dudley handing back some of his paycheck. The players are quick to state this is a business when it suits their purpose, but a group investing hundreds of millions isn't allowed to make a profit?

Dudley's complaining about big markets not being able or willing to spend ridiculous sums of money to build super teams. So NY has asked Melo to take a paycut so they have more space to sign other guys. I have a solution for Dudley and these other candy asses. Stop crying about your situation and play harder to make it better. I think they should go to a hard cap and then Dudley will realize how easy they had it. Everyone isn't supposed to get a trophy!

This is why Lebron will never be considered to be on MJ's level. He has to have a stacked team to win a title.

Bruce Willis said it best in The Last BoyScout. FA has ruined the game!

What the hell are you talking about? The Clippers just sold for 2 billion dollars! He bought them for 13 million. That's a return on investment if I've ever seen it.

Glen could sell the team tomorrow and get enough to buy Lebron about 50 times over.

Last time I looked, most "well off people" expect to double their money every five years in high risk investments. That 12 mil investment Sterling made would have grown to around a billion. So he doubled that, good for him.

You either way overestimate what the wolves are worth, or way underestimate what Lebron is worth.

Considering the Bucks went for 550 million, I'm guessing Glen could get like 700 for the Wolves? Probably get even more if he allowed the team to be moved to Seattle. So Lebron made 18 million a year? So about 38 times, so I was a little off

I doubt the wolves are fetching 700 mil, but let's say they are. Glen has owned the team for around 20 years now. He invested around 100 mil at that point. I would say 600 mil minus significant losses over the last several years wouldn't be considered much of a ROI.

What I don't understand is comparing what Taylor would make over a span of 20 years against what Lebron made in NBA salary last season. Also keep in mind that Lebron could have made at least 3 or 4 mil more if he hadn't agreed to take less to gang up on the Heat. You forgot to include Lebron's other ten years of salary as well as all the endorsements he has made due to playing in the NBA. Lebron is estimated at 72 mil for last season including endorsements and over 450 mil for his career. That is the same amount of money in half the time.

No what's ABSURD is that it's a billion dollar industry. The TV deals are ridiculous and they (these sports leagues) keep demanding more & more which translates into us fans & even non fans to pay more for TV, etc. It's like putting a frog in a pot of cold water & slowly turning it up. It gradually gets more & more expensive for this stuff so people accept it. They straight up take advantage of people and it's sad.

Didn't read the entire thread. But, I know this...

The owners took the players to the cleaners in the last lockout. That's a huge reason (along with the massive impending tv deal) that team values have skyrocketed. Now, those same owners are spending foolishly for guys like Gordon Hayward ($15M+) while also asking the superstar guys who are worth much, much more than Hayward to make less than him.

The owners have already won. (until the next lockout) Now, they're trying to eat every cake in the window. The players owe it to themselves and the next generation of players to get what they can when they can.

The owners blatantly lied during the last lockout and still got the majority of the public to back them. Now, they are acting foolishly again... and hypocritically again... and some people are still supporting them?

Personally, I don't get the scorn toward the athletes on this one.

Great post Abe. Why even try to blame one side in this. It is business and both sides are trying to get what they can. If the owners really don't want player movement then they should be paying stars what they are truly worth and found a way to incentivize keep players that you draft and develop. This CBA is great for owners and the only recourse that is left for players to get the most out of their value through player movement. The only thing this CBA has ensured is that the owners have protection from their ridiculous spending habits.

Yeah I agree, the players are going for their piece of the pie, but in reality the pie is getting far too big. I wonder how this new massive TV deal is going to affect all of us paying for cable, etc. This shit is excessively expensive as it is.

I did some quick math...

Glen Taylor is worth 1.7 billion
Wolves lost 6 million last year

That is the equivalent of someone who makes 50,000 a year losing 176 dollars.

Yea poor owners
