and another stomach punch to wolves fans!
Re: and another stomach punch to wolves fans!
anyone else find it hard to believe that Pera never spoke with Joerger before the weekend. What kind of owner doesn't at least have or sit in on a meeting with his coaching staff, or grants permission for that coach to interview elsewhere without talking to him. I think Joerger is back in Memphis because Pera found out that nobody else would take the job after the crap that has gone down over the last season.

We always have that faction that finds a sliver of positivity about someone/something, and then builds a case from that sliver to try and convince that it could/should work.
NO, Sam Mitchell is not a championship quality coach and never will be. It should be as plain as the nose on your face, and no Wolves fan should be happy or satisfied with such a potential hire. Haven't we been through enough? Demand excellence for once as a fan base, it's the only way you're ever going to get it.
As a proud member of that faction that looks for a sliver of positivity. let me try to speak on behalf of my group. Sometimes the negativity on this board becomes so dominant, that elements of truth tend to get obscured. I have been saying for close to a month now that Mitchell should be considered as a candidate, but to me he has always been one of several candidates that I would have been satisfied with. I don't see any of the candidates out there as being perfect. Even though I was completely on board with Joerger once it seemed we were going in that direction, I have to admit I had some concerns about a 40 year old coach that the Grizzlies were willing to give up on. I am a Hoiberg advocate, but I do have concerns about someone with no NBA coaching experiencing. And the same goes for David Blatt...intriguing candidate, but no NBA track record.
And there are arguments in favor of and against Mitchell too...it's not all black and white like the "black cloud" faction tries to argue. On the negative side, his winning percentage is not strong, he had a public dispute with Vince Carter, and he has not coached much since he left Toronto. But your faction conveniently ignores the positive facts. He led the Raptors to the playoffs in 2 of the 4 seasons that he coached them, even though he inherited a team that was in shambles, and in one of those years he won Coach of the Year honors. In none of his four years was he given a roster anywhere comparable to the roster Adelman had to work with last year, and his COY award I believe was the experts recognizing how he had overachieved. And he is a proven leader. I first became aware of the high regard in which the league held him when his leadership helped avert an NBA strike several yeas ago. Without Mitchell's strength and leadership, the NBA players association would have almost certainly gone on strike.
While I appreciate the basketball wisdom on this board and I am a daily reader, sometimes I think the truth gets smothered by an avalanche of pessimism. A little more balance would be a good thing to aim for sometimes.
Yeah yeah yeah. Pelfrey still sucks. :thumb:
Always appreciate your posts, LST. Well-thought and generally long enough to gain a full sense of what your opinion is.
I too believe hiring Mitchell would be a mistake, though.
Cam.shhhhhh! Don't let these guys who don't visit the baseball threads know I support Pelfrey. I'll lose whatever credibility I still have!

LST, I'm also a daily reader as you know. But we must not read the same threads because I see way more optimism for a franchise that doesn't deserve any than pessimism. I think it's time as a board and fan base that we say enough already. Hire the right guy, draft the right guys, make a decent trade or two. Or you can hire Mitchell, draft a borderline rotation player, and continue to get fleeced on trades.
Re: and another stomach punch to wolves fans!
After reading about Skiles on Wikipedia I think he would be a pretty solid but not spectacular hire and yes better than Mitchell. :) I didn't know about him coaching half the season over in Greece after he asked to be let out of his playing contract becasue of injury and they fired the coach and hired him. So he has some overseas coaching experience!!!

I have brought up skiles a number of times in the past. He is my number 1 choice right now. The only guys i like more than him were joerger and hoiberg, now both are gone. I understand the love for hollins but he is 60 years old and I dont think we are at a point where an old coach will be a good fit.
Skiles did well with the bulls and bucks, Kirk heinrich and jennings were well developed by him, I think he can be good for rubio.

Monster, Skiles has poor character. More illegitimate kids than coaching stops. We can do better.

I can't disagree that we are long-suffering fans, cool, but sometimes I think the misadventures of recent years, which I blame primarily on David Kahn and a tragic series of injuries (even Adelman's wife's physical issues), causes some to paint the current regime with the same brush. The board seems too quick to condemn Flip and Glen about Joerger's decision to stay with Memphis, for instance, when there is no evidence that they did anything wrong in pursuing him. Similarly, I don't see enough balance in the Sam Mitchell discussion. The naysayers continue to bring up a player conflict which many believe is largely embellished and Sam's below .500 record, without talking about the subpar roster he was given. To finish third in the East (and the conferences were more balanced in 2007) in just his third year after inheriting a team that was 20 games under .500 when he started is a remarkable accomplishment.
You say we need to hire the right guy, and I agree, but I wonder who that is. It has to be someone who is willing to come and rebuild after our franchise player leaves us. and many of the guys that we want just don't want to take a chance here. Cool, what potential coach is out there and wants to take a chance with a Love-less Wolves team, and has either been a Coach of the Year or had as much success as Mitchell in turning around a team in such a short period of time? Who's your guy, cool...convince me.

I didnt know that. knowing glen, that will probably be a red flag for him. So were back to sam mitchell as the leading candidate then.

That's what Flip's job is suppose to be. Maybe hear about somebody on the spurs staff, or another good coaching staff. When reports are that it's just guys with Minnesota ties, it comes off as bush league and very lazy
