So Is Flip Coaching again a good idea?

Post by Papalrep »

He puts his boy he brought in in charge and has the final say on personel, and coaches the team' like Popovich. This is a real possibility, maybe a probability. I hate it. I would like to see Hoiberg coach and Flip stay upstairs. Glen, just tell him no.

I don't like it, and also think it's not likely. Flip hasn't had a lot of success as a head coach, and I think we can do better. I would argue that this is an attractive opportunity for the right guy. An astute NBA mind will see how Adelman misused his roster this year, and will be excited about what he can do with the current guys plus a strong draft pick. Almost all NBA analysts I listen to talk about the Wolves as an underachieving team this year, so a potential coach assessing the opportunity will sense a lot of potential upside.

I would have rather had Flip coaching instead of Adelman this year. I guarantee he would have got Dieng and Shabazz more minutes. Guy wants to see what he has in his draft picks. That's Adelman's biggest downfall this year even more-so than his decisions with Barea and DC.

Yeah, I agree Cam. Even though Adelman will be remembered as a far superior coach to Saunders, Flip would have had more success with this squad this year. It's clear from listening to recent Flip interviews that he is not pleased with Adelman's use of the young guys this year.

It raises an interesting question that I don't have the answer to. What does the Wolves organization chart look like? Does Rick report to Flip who reports to Glen, or do both Flip and Rick report to Glen? And how does it work in most NBA franchises? I would think that it would be better for the coach to report to the PBO. That doesn't mean that Flip needs to be involved in day to day coaching decisions, but I do think the PBO should have a strong voice in more global issues...like does Shabazz deserve 5 minutes a game or 20.

Anybody know how the Wolves, or a typical NBA franchise, is structured from a decision making standpoint?

I 100% believed that was the plan from day one and will continue to believe until such time as a new coach not named Flip is hired!

I like flip better as a coach than as head of the front office. That said, I dont want to see him hold both positions and i dont see him giving up his front office position. So it would be a no for me.

Of the coaches available, Others have mentioned stan van gundy and lionel hollins.

Il add 3 more:

1. scott skiles. I think skiles would be a good coach for rubio. Had success witht he bulls and bucks and overachieved with the rosters he had.

2. Nate mcmilan. Did well with the sonics and blazers. Could be someone love would approved of, having spent time together on team usa and love growing up in portland

3. Bill bayno. Bayno is underrated in my opinion, he has work his way up from player development to assistant to lead assistant. The guy had coaching experience as well in other leagues and is a fiesty kind of a coach. He has paid his dues and deserve a chance.

Flip hasn't had a lot of success as a head coach? Pepole seem to remember just his last years with WAS//.. He has 638 wins to 526 losses... Befor his two bad seasons with the wizz, He really only had 2 other bad Seasons>>95-96 and 04-05 were he only had 51 games for some reason 25-26...All the other years he was over .500 and 7 of them years he was way over .500.. I'm not saying he's a HOF coach but the man has had good success as a HC in the NBA for 16 years....

I'm fine with Flip taking over. He seems to have a good relationship with K-Love, and could be the right coach for Ricky--he'll let him play his game. Plus he drafted Shabazz, so obviously he has an interest in seeing him develop.

And let him try to make a horse-race out of this team he built. That should make him work even harder.

I think a few of us called it.

Saunders was a coach with some success for a long time. Adelman was an older coach nearing the end.

Why wouldn't Saunders be interested in coaching? It's a dream spot for a lot of guys. You make the personnel calls AND you don't have to appease the coach in doing so.

It's not easy to get both. So why wouldn't he take it?

Because if he sucks, guess who's never getting fired...
