Confusing contract talk.

So, if Love signs an extension... can the Wolves offer more than he'd make as a free agent?

I have read that there's no incentive for Love to sign an extension. But, no tangible proof.

Anybody else?

He can get more salary from us than anybody else, but that might not matter when you compare his endorsement opportunities in a bigger market.

not sure the exact numbers but yes we can offer a bigger and longer contract. If he left it would be like the Dwight Howard deal where he left a little money on the table but its not as much as some people think.

People get confused when they look at the total amount of the contracts and say he would be leaving 30 million (or whatever the exact number is) on the table if he left because we can offer a year more than everyone else. but in reality he wouldn't be leaving that much on the table unless he had a career ending injury or suddenly sucked and nobody offered him another contract.

It looks like we can offer 7.5% annual raises along with the extra year (5 years total). while other teams can only offer 4.5% raises and only 4 years

The extension, which can't be signed until Jan 25, 2015 would add two years onto his opt in year, giving him three more seasons. If he waits to be a FA by opting out in the summer of 2015 (about 3 months of playing time) he can sign for five more years. The CBA really screwed teams in terms of getting something for a player if he leaves. There is no incentive for Love to sign the extension, so the wolves have to roll the dice, and hope he either re-signs as a FA or agrees to a S&T which likely still wouldn't bring as much back.

There is a gray area that teams/players don't have to inform the NBA on an option being picked up until the end of June of that year, so it is possible for Love to agree to opt in unless he re-signs for a longer deal. Not sure how that is handled exactly, but I remember Larry Coon talking about it.

And this is the point which shows the owners were talking out their asses when they mentioned competitive balance in the CBA negotiations. You should be able to sign your players for astronomically more money without luxury tax implications. It is so frustrating. At the very least the Max player extenstion should be available at any point in a players career based on when they peak.

So you saying if love went to LAL for 4years 64Mill and truned down the wolves offer of 5years 100Mil offer he would not be leaving 36Mill on the table?

The difference in the two deals would likely be around 23-25 mil. But allday is simply stating that he wouldn't have a guarantee for the fifth year in LA, but would likely makeup 20 mil in his next contract. So after the five years he would likely only be out 3-5 mil overall. It could possibly affect farther down the road as well on his following deals, but nobody knows what the CBA will be like then.
