Who do we bring back next year

Post by KG4Ever »

Barring no trades, the players I want to see brought back:

Ant
Jaden
Rudy
KAT
Slomo
Conley
NAW
Naz
Prince
Garza
Minott
Moore
JMAC (probably unless we can sign Shake Milton, then I don't care if he comes back)

-------Time to say goodbye:
Rivers
Knight
Nowell
Ryan

That would be a nice roster, but I don't think ownership is going to pony up for Naz. It's not my money, so I hope they do venture deep into the lux tax...but I don't think they will for a backup center with suspect defense. I also don't see Moore Jr. as an NBA player, but maybe he'll surprise me. Some here will say JMac has to go, but I see him as the player we saw during the regular season...not the guy we saw (or didn't see, rather) during the playoffs. I don't know who that imposter was during the playoffs who thought he could score at the rim, and ended up getting blocked every time. That's not the way he generally plays, and I agreed with Finchie's decision to bench him.

Wolves for next season would not enter the lux tax bringing Naz back. It’s the 24-25 season where the lux tax is an issue. Just want that out there because they can bring him back and not be in the lux tax for 1 season, so they can alway trade Naz next offseason if need be.

That's true, kek. But my worry is Naz will have a 4th consecutive season where he gives up more points than he generates (he's a team-worst and fairly consistent -6.5, -6.7, and -7.8 on/off the past three seasons, so we know what he is). That's going to be difficult for GMs to ignore, and we very likely might be saddled with a big contract we can't move...and we still have to pay Ant and Jaden. I think it's time to cut bait right now and give Garza his minutes.

This is where my head is at too. I like the player. And it's a great development story. But don't fall in love and over pay because he was one of our own. Instead, find the next Naz. I think you sort of have to treat your roster like a college roster and let guys graduate when they get too expensive. You back fill with new (cheaper) recruits. Of course it goes without saying that you retain guys like Edwards and McDaniels that separate themselves from the pack. Those guys you have to pay. But the rest of the roster is really about cost vs. production and many times there are vets out there who will take a lot less to stay in the league vs. retaining your own guy.

I agree with this list. But I wouldn't necessarily be torn if we also let Garza and Jmac go. I'd prefer to try out a couple random young PGs as backups to Conley to try to strike gold, because Jmac ain't it even though many here thought he could be our starter. Naz I would love to keep, but doubt that happens unless Towns is moved.

Top priorities are obviously SloMo and with the way NAW defended and played within the offense he is #2. Prince #3 (I think he has 1 more year?).

Stretches of a lineup of Ant/NAW/Jaden/SloMo/Gobert has great defensive potential.
