Taurean Prince

Post by Sundog »

Do any of you metrics gurus have a handle on what we might expect from TP going forward? His contract becomes guaranteed this summer for something like $7million. Pretty good value there, but his production seemed to fall off this season. Certainly a tradeable contract if they think his production and minutes could be replaced by a combo of NAW and Minott… what do folks think?

His advanced metrics weren't very good last year, but I would absolutely not let him go unless he's attached to some bigger deal. But all else staying the same, I wouldn't touch him.

Not that this is news to anyone, but one thing the playoffs demonstrate is that you MUST have non-star rotation guys that can make open 3's. Prince can do that. He may not be great at anything else, but he's a career 40%+ corner 3-pt shooter and he can help punish a defense that decides it wants to load up on Ant or KAT.

NAW is a still-developing 3-pt shooter. He's capable of making them, but the track record and consistency isn't quite there yet. Plus it's tough to trust his form. And Minott is even more unproven at this time. Not that those guys shouldn't be on the roster next year, but we just can't afford to take a step back in terms of 3-pt shooting.

The only real problem with Prince is that he misses games. He is fairly competent at pretty much everything. He did have some weird brain farts at end of games this year but still it’s hard to find a guy that can hit 3’s, play some decent defense at multiple positions, handle the ball some, actually create shots for himself and others at times and also not try to do to much. Is he a guy that’s anywhere near untouchable? No but he has plenty of value. If the Wolves could get a player that was an upgrade in a deal especially for a guard then yeah sure but they would need to find a legit SF wing type in FA or some other type move.

If they did move Prince keeping Matt Ryan around in some way might make more sense depending on what the deal was for Prince. Dealing Prince would mean the Wolves would likely need shooting. I’m not saying we should be relying on Matt Ryan being the answer there but I did like what I saw from him.

Meanwhile you could argue the Wolves could sell high on Prince in a trade. His most efficient years of his career are the 2 with the Wolves. He seems like a classic guy that would fit on pretty much any team. He turned 29 a few weeks ago so he isn’t old yet but again misses games and it doesn’t seem likely that’s going to get better as he ages. If he stays healthy enough his game would probably be fine though he doesn’t rely on wild athleticism etc.
