I agree Lip, the Wolves should re-sign Naz unless he gets an offer that’s just too expensive to match (> $15m).
I was gonna say they should move heaven (KAT) and/or earth (Rudy) to make that happen, but they can resign Naz without making a move like that right away, and I don’t want to create additional barriers to retaining Naz. If Ant and Jaden want him here, that’s good enough for me.
Naz Reid
Re: Naz Reid
I would assume the team will strongly want to move forward with 2 of KAT, Rudy and Naz. If there are indications that the team didn't make a strong push to keep Naz then it would indicate to me that the team wants to build around the big 4 and parts. We should know soon.
Re: Naz Reid
I agree the Wolves could sign Naz without moving KAT or Rudy this summer. They’d have a hard time doing that and still staying under the luxury tax threshold next season, but I’m sure it’s possible financially with some maneuvering. My concern is that NAZ won’t want to sign here if Rudy and KAT are on the roster because that would likely mean he won’t get the elevated role he’s clearly seeking and, in my view, deserves. If we can keep all three, I’ll be fine with that for next season with the understanding that the Wolves will likely have to move one of the three, probably KAT or Rudy, next summer. Right now, you do everything you can to keep Naz because he’s the future.Sundog wrote: ↑Sat Jun 17, 2023 11:22 am I agree Lip, the Wolves should re-sign Naz unless he gets an offer that’s just too expensive to match (> $15m).

Re: Naz Reid
Lip if we are gonna compare Naz situation to Billips and Brandon honestly part of me thinks you should be considering that the Wolves should be trading Towns. I know you want to say it’s Gobert but Naz and Towns are much more similar players and I think it’s hard to see those guys playing together and being successful on both ends and I like both guys.
Personally I think Naz is more like the Tyus situation. Both guys have shown some ability when they got opportunities. Tyus was the guy with solid stats but excellent advanced stats and Naz is the guy with some nice per minute stats but poor advanced stats. I love Tyus but I thought the Wolves were right to let him go for the money he got. In hindsight they should have kept him it would have been worth it. Would Tyus answer the PG problem for this team? Maybe? He would have been a better option than just about anything else we have right now …long term as Conley probably isn’t going to continue to ne effective too much longer. Of course what hurts more is how McLaughlin played down the stretch this season. Typically he was sort of a Tyus lite but he just didn’t play well enough.
Maybe you are right Naz is worth spending basically whatever it takes to resign him. Idk it feels like a lot of money when I think there might be other options for much cheaper. I really like Naz and want him back and so don’t think it’s gonna cost a deal like you are talking about to keep him. I also think the posters that have said if the Wolves sign Naz to a more pricey contract that might give an idea that the Wolves are considering moving Towns or Gobert in the future…yeah that makes sense to me.
Let’s go back to Tyus Jones again. Memphis paid sort of a premium to keep him last offseason as a backup when he was an unrestricted FA. Looks like a bit of a genius move now especially with Ja being such a dumbass. The Wolves might decide they want to keep Naz because they value him more than losing him. That might be smart to do as well. Hopefully Naz doesn’t actually cost more than say the mid-level. Part of that is whether teams consider him a starter or a potential starter. I don’t think teams will view him that way and keep his salary down especially since he is a big. Hopefully NAW isn’t that expensive either. It would be nice to be able to spend more than the vet min on another FA most likely a guard or some sort of versatile perimeter player. One think the Wolves may have going for them is they may have the benefit of a reasonably clear opportunity for a guard to come in and get minutes on a good team playing with guys like Edwards and learning for Conley. Where is that Billups type guy that’s sort of an under the radar signing?

As you may have noticed in all my posts, I’m definitely open to trading KAT even though I’d much prefer trading Rudy. Once I saw the new CBA ramifications more than a month ago, I’ve been convinced we need to trade one of them this summer. I liked the way team performed when Naz was playing alongside either Rudy or KAT last season. It’s become clear to me he’s more of a PF than a center.
You might be right that Naz is more of a Tyus Jones than a Chauncey Billups. But I think he has more upside at his position than Tyus had at his. I think he’ll be a starter in this League and a very good one.
Re: Naz Reid
Lip I would like to know how you define your very good starter vision for Reid. Can you give a comparison of a big in terms of impact? Also I’d like to see the numbers of how successful Reid was playing next to Gobert and or Towns and how many minutes it was. I don’t remember him playing that many minutes with those guys. I get the idea of him being more of a PF and I don’t totally disagree with that but honestly I think he is a guy that’s sorta of a big tweener not really a fit at either spot…which means unless he gets better on D (which is possible) he isn’t a starter.
Anywho I’ll hang up and listen.

Re: Naz Reid
I know you asked Lip this question, but the closest NBA comp for Naz in my opinion is Montrezl Harrell. He's faded a bit recently, but his career is similar to Naz in that he was an efficient, scoring big that came off the bench, but was just a so-so rebounder and defender.....which is why he rarely started.Monster wrote: ↑Sun Jun 18, 2023 1:19 pmLip I would like to know how you define your very good starter vision for Reid. Naz can probably play a little PF now and then, but in today's NBA there is just no way that can be something he does beyond just spot minutes.
If we sign Naz, I agree with you that he is much more redundant with KAT than with Rudy.

Re: Naz Reid
I'm wondering how big of a drop off would their be if we sign/trade Naz and keep Garza?
* Both guys are roughly same age (Naz a year younger)
* Both guys are mostly offense, not much for defense
* Both guys have played fine when given opportunities:
Career Per 36 for Naz are 20.6 points/9.0 rebounds PER 17.7
Career Per 36 for Garza is 20.9 points/9.3 rebounds PER 18.4
Naz has logged significantly more minutes than Garza - so while Garza matches his traditional stats on a per 36, we don't know if that will actually hold up. But...we don't know it won't either.
I've read reports Naz is looking for a bigger role and I just don't see that happening here assuming KAT/Rudy healthy. I'm not sure what his value would be for sign trade. But we got Conley, NAW and three seconds for DLO. So maybe Naz brings back:
* a rotational vet
* an underachieving young guy and/or
* one second round pick?
I'd be fine with that and split his 1200 minutes between Minott/Garza and maybe a big they get back in trade.

Re: Naz Reid
I'm pleased to hear the organization values Naz Reid. I really believe we would regret letting him go for nothing. He can flat out score and should only improve going forward. The other thing which doesn't get discussed is his desire to win. I've heard no one takes losses harder than he does. We need more of this trait on the team. We have too many Nowell's that could care less about the final score. After finally developing a guy who can play, we need to reap the benefits of him or at least get something for him in return.

Re: Naz Reid
Yep. If I recall, Naz was the first guy to step in during the Rudy/SlowMo fight. I believe he reacted immediately and gave Rudy a big shove after the punch while several other guys just watched. That says something about his character.Coolbreeze44 wrote: ↑Sun Jun 18, 2023 3:46 pm I'm pleased to hear the organization values Naz Reid. There are a lot of ways this can still go. I do appreciate that he's continued to improve year over year. I agree it would be sad to have him walk away for nothing. I guess we all just have to wait and see what his actual market value is among the NBA and go from there.
