David Kahn Interview with SI

Pretty interesting read about what he's doing in Paris trying to build up a team there.

the key part of when he mentions Minnesota

Indeed, it can seem everyone is trying to get to the U.S. except for Kahn. He tells me he wouldn’t take an NBA GM job if offered one. “No, I’m not leaving, “he says. “This is my favorite city in the world.” He pauses. “I don’t know if I’ve ever been more miserable [than I was in Minnesota].”

What if he could go back knowing everything he does now?

“I wouldn’t have taken the job,” Kahn says.

What he will say: “I hope that some of the things that I did at other parts of my career, including at Minnesota, may have been a little bit unnoticed.” He cites the concept of leaving a place better than when you arrive. “I am certain”—he leans in over the café table for emphasis—“triply certain, I left the Timberwolves in a much, much better place than when I arrived.”

Yes, it became better because he left. So I agree with him! Please stay in Paris!

Taylor was such a bumpkin when it came to most of his basketball operations hiring decisions, with Kahn being a low point, along with his direct dealings with players.

I’ll call BS of Kahn’s claim that he wouldn’t have taken the job if he knew then what he knows now. It was the opportunity of a lifetime for a low-level sportswriter, which is what Kahn was at the time. He would have taken the job even if he knew he’d be buried in the rubble of an unexpected earthquake.

Never underestimate the power of self-deception by those with oversized egos. Glen Taylor gave Kahn all the rope he needed or wanted. Unfortunately for the Wolves, Kahn used the rope to hang himself. What Kahn knows now that he didn’t know then is that he should have drafted Curry instead of Flynn, which is what at least 90% of rubes on the ESPN message board wanted him to do at the time and what the vast majority of GMs would have done. He also knows now, but obviously didn’t know before, is that you don’t sign a guy like Darko to a multi-year contract after Darko had already demonstrated that he had no interest in playing basketball. He knows now, but apparently didn’t know before, that you don’t sign guys like Brandon Roy whose knees are bone-on-bone based on the player having received an unproven injection.

The list goes on so I’ll stop there. But come on, Mr. Kahn. Have you no shame!?

I’m not convinced either but I will point out that Kahn wasn’t a sportswriter at the time he took the Wolves job.

Regardless this was a super interesting read and worth the time spent. I’m not convinced Kahn will succeed but I think it’s a pretty nifty idea and to be honest not many people would be willing to do what he is doing…probably partly because they have better options. Lol I hope it works not for David Kahn but because a I think it would be cool to have some high level basketball in Paris. When I’ve traveled to Europe I’ve often tried to see about watching some basketball there. It’s weird to figure out what league games are playing where and a few times there wasn’t any home games when I was visiting. I wasn’t planning our travel time around some random basketball game that my wife wouldn’t care about. Lol

Clowns are revered in Paris. I wasn’t expecting Abe to compliment David Kahn like this.
