An oddity on Jmac’s status is teams can start negotiating with FAs at 5 CDT today, but I assume the Wolves have until the end of the day to waive Jmac. So they can see how negotiations are going, then decide what to do with Jmac…

I don’t think it bodes well for Jmac with Moore on the roster. And if Jmac is waived, does that free up his nickname for McDaniels?

And of course, there is still a KAT trade looming over all this! The Wolves may need open roster spots for the bodies coming in from a KAT trade, so that also does not bode well for Jmac.

Knight getting cut seemed obvious especially with Garza on a 2-way for now Miller drafted and Naz resigned. Knight is a solid player I wouldn’t be surprised if another team ends up signing him to a non guaranteed vet min deal and he sticks. The Wolves ended up with better options.

As for McLaughlin the Wolves could cut him and resign him to a vet min and actually save a little money. To me it seems like another possible calculation of letting a guy go and seeing if you can upgrade that spot or at worst sign a guy that’s equally as good for that price. If McLaughlin didn’t have some injury history I think I would be like just keep him but at this point I can see the rationale in letting him go and seeing what else they could add with that spot including a younger player.

JMac is entering his 5th NBA season. Interestingly, JMac’s salary of $2.320M next season is slightly less than the minimum salary for a 5th year NBA vet. I’m not sure about this, but I think signing a free agent to a minimum NBA salary only counts $1.7M against the cap. If that’s true, then it would be a win-win for the Wolves to waive JMac and re-sign him to a vet minimum deal. JMac would make slightly more (about $200K more) but the Wolves would get an extra $600,000 room under the luxury tax threshold. Not a big deal, but it could matter.

By the way, it’s being reported that the Knicks are the front runner to get Donte. Looks like TC’s going to strike out on both Bruce Brown and Donte DiVincenzo. Welcome to Minnesota, TC! He was fortunate to get Kyle Anderson last season. But the Wolves don’t land coveted free agents - not even the second or third tier one. That’s just the way it is. If you’re running the Wolves basketball operations you have to accept the reality that you build entirely through the draft and signing young undrafted free agents who fly under the radar. Fortunately, those are supposedly TC’s strengths.

Dane Moore said the vet min is slightly over 2 million so the Wolves would save around 300k. I have no idea what McLaughlin’s value is around the league but maybe the Wolves could get him back on a non-guaranteed or partially guaranteed deal. To be honest if I was McLaughlin I’d probably take any guaranteed money if offered from the Wolves. He is an undersized backup PG that had a down year. I’m not saying there is no way that a team will eventually give him a fully guaranteed vet min deal in FA at some point but…it’s also possible he is fighting for a job in training camp or has to work his way back into the league by playing in the G-league. I do hope in some way he comes back to the Wolves but as a someone that only a short few months ago was willing to sign him to a multi year cheap extension…his value has simply gone down after last season. I still believe in him being a worthwhile NBA player but I feel less certain about it and him being healthy and ready to do his thing. Like Jon K said about them letting Prince go it’s a business.
