Horry vs Harden

Post by FNG »

Fun question posed by Rick Kamla on NBA Radio yesterday...whose career would you rather have: Robert Horry making $35 million and getting 7 rings, or James Harden with $300 million and no rings. Antonio Davis mocked it and said obviously everyone would take Harden and the bigger bag. But the first 4 callers chose Harden and made a lot of good arguments. They said winning a ring was very important...just look at how Shaq makes fun of Barclay for not having one. And for most of the world, $35 million over a career is already life changing money (and $300 million is just obscene!)

I actually chose the Horry option also. Davis never backed down, and talked about all the texts he was getting from current and former NBA players saying the obvious answer was Harden.

Who do you guys choose...Horry or Harden?

Let me first say, Rick Kamla is an idiot and Daniels isn't the man of mystery he thinks he is. How many times per show does AD ask, "You know what I mean?"

But in answer to the question, I'd take Horry. Someone smart can take the $35 million and use it to create greater wealth, but money can't buy you championships.

I would take Harden's, just too big of a monetary difference. Horry and 100 million would be my sweet spot

Well said, Cool!! I love listening to NBA Radio with one huge exception. I’d can’t stomach listening to Rick Kamala and Antonio Daniels.

I’ll join you and others in taking the $35M with 7 rings over Harden’s fatter wallet along, fat belly and no championships. It’s not a close question for me. Either way, I’m financially wealthy beyond the wildest dreams of just about everyone and I have something priceless - championships and the pride of accomplishment that goes along with those championships.

Rick Kamla grew up in Minnesota, and like many sports fans in the state was a big Vikings fan. But after relocating and being disappointed by the repeated franchise failures, decided to quit being a fan. I'm sorry, but as a true fan you can't fucking quit. Guys on this forum who have been through the never ending disappointments of following the Wolves, can probably appreciate what I'm saying here.

If you listen to the show with Daniels, he is routinely submissive to his commentary. He rarely challenges anything he says and lets AD walk over him. There is some good content on NBA radio, but not this show as Lip says. The only dumber person on the network is Sam Mitchell. You listen to that idiot and you develop a greater sense of wonderment for how he ever became an NBA coach.

Honestly I’d probably feel really fortunate to just be Brynn Forbes. Lol

Not sure where they got the 35 million for Horry. Hoops Hype said he made 53 million in his career. In addition I’ll also say that if Horry was playing in this era he would have made 35 million in like just 2-3 seasons. He never made more than 6 million in any season. Meanwhile PJ Tucker is currently on a 3 year 33 million contract in his late 30’s. A Robert Horry type PF the last few seasons (even when he was in his mid to late 30’s) would be HIGHLY sought after. I’d guess Horry would have made at least 100 million if he played during the same time as Harden. Tucker at the end of his latest contract (if he opts into that final year) will have made 89 million. Horry got his career started much earlier than Tucker and was a better player. We might be talking more like 125-150 million or more.

So really the question is more like would you take like 100+ million for Horry’s career or the 300+ that Harden is gonna make. If you appreciate winning then the decision is probably easy even if you include Harden likely will pull in a significantly higher earning amount during his career on endorsements. It feels like Horry is a guy that could make some good money being a guy in the media and I know he does some stuff currently. I’m not sure what Harden will do after basketball. I believe he is very smart about the game but I wonder if he drops out of the game entirely and does something else. He is kind of a weird dude.

As for Kamla…I remember thinking he did a nice job doing play by play in summer league games and other games I heard him do. For Summer league he clearly did some actual research and was excited about the experience showing lots of energy during broadcasts. As a media commentator type yeah I don’t feel like there is much of any value.

Sam Mitchell…dude can talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk which is great for being on the radio. He doesn’t seem to give a shit about what people think of what he says which can lead to lots of content! Lol I think he is actually a good (certainly not great) basketball coach…but to be a good head coach (seems like he has an ego about not being an assistant which he would probably be good at) you have to play the game of acting like you are a high ranking official of a big time corporation. Sure if you one of the greatest of all time coaches like say billichek you can say whatever you want (within some sort of reason) and be kind of a dick but Sam isn’t THAT good of a coach. I always thought it was telling that Flip seemed to not really interested in Sam being the Wolves head coach despite reporting that Glen liked that idea. Trust me I’m not feeling bad for Sam Mitchell though. He lives a pretty good life doing the media thing while also helping out with various high level prospects at camps and stuff etc. Not bad for a guy picked in the 3rd round of the 1985 draft. Michael Adams was picked a few spots later. Side note: It’s wild there used to be so many rounds in the NBA draft. Mario Elie was picked in the 7th round!
