Last roster spot
Re: Last roster spot
I'm going to be the first -1 on Washington. I didn't like him much in college...I thought a highly regarded recruit who was also older than most incoming freshman should have performed better at Kentucky. His stats weren't terrible, but he did seem to struggle against better competition. I thought he should have stayed one more year in college. He's not very athletic or quick, and isn't a great shooter. His poor first year performance with Houston was about what I expected. I know there are concerns about finding "the point guard of the future", but I have to believe there are far better options than Ty Ty. Plus, I think we're just fine for this season at PG with Conley, JMac, SloMo, Ant and NAW. I'll pass.
Re: Last roster spot
FNG, fair enough. He's not a perfect prospect and that is why he is available (but given our lack of draft capital, I'd say he's worth a look as a potential developmental point guard who wouldn't cost anything). In TyTy's defense, he only had one year of college at Kentucky and looked like a lottery pick until he got injured in 2022. Here's a snippet from a draft profile about that:
[A]s the 18 games prior to the injury saw Washington average 14.2 points, 4.6 assists, and 4.2 rebounds with 51%/40%/77% shooting splits; conversely, his numbers in 13 games after the ankle injury decreased to 10.8 points, 3.0 assists, and 2.7 rebounds on 36%/29%/73% shooting splits. https://swarmandsting.com/2022/06/02/ch ... ashington/
Here are some more highlights from the article: Washington possesses an intriguing player profile as versatile shot-creator who has a great feel for spacing and at times showed flashes of elite playmaking ability. He makes his money on the offensive end with his potential to mold into an elite three-level scorer.
He’s fast, has a nice shooting form, adequate ball handling skills and a solid floater. While at Kentucky, Washington broke John Wall’s school record for most assists in a single game with 17 against the Georgia Bulldogs. Though he rarely goes for the highlight pass, Washington can read the floor and thrives when using the initial screen at the top of the key.
On the defensive end, Washington will need to get stronger, but the potential to become a plus defender is there. He hustles and takes pride on defense. His stance is consistent, and he never loses sight of where he needs to be in off-ball situations. Adding a few pounds of muscle to his frame and learning how to fully take advantage of his 6’9’’ wingspan could turn Washington in to an absolute defensive menace.

That's some interesting data, KG...thanks for that. I also remember that he was a top-rated prospect coming out of HS. I would not be opposed to us taking a flyer on Washington...some team will for sure. I still don't see PG as an immediate position of need though.
Re: Last roster spot
I agree that its not a position of need now with Conley, Shake and JMAC hopefully being able to man the point this season and with Ant and SloMo having the ability to play point if needed. We also have NAW who might be able to run point in a pinch. I'm looking past the near future to when Conley departs. One of the above guys might be the answer, but it won't hurt to use a roster spot on a guy who has the potential to be a quality starter or rotational player in 2-3 years. I'm on board with signing TyTy, but the only question for me is whether to use a two-way or a roster spot. I don't know how two-way contracts work if another team offers your two-way player a standard contract. If we have the right to match, then I don't care either way. If not, then I'd probably probably consider putting Garza in the 15th spot as he seems to be performing well in international play to be getting on some other NBA team's radars for a standard deal.FNG wrote: ↑Sun Aug 20, 2023 6:41 am That's some interesting data, KG...thanks for that. Garza signed his 2-way deal this year so he is locked in.KG4Ever wrote: ↑Sun Aug 20, 2023 2:12 pmI agree that its not a position of need now with Conley, Shake and JMAC hopefully being able to man the point this season and with Ant and SloMo having the ability to play point if needed. Matt Ryan hasn’t signed his 2-way deal and even if he did the Wolves can drop anyone on a 2-way deal anyway. It’s somewhat interesting that OKC signed a 26 year old guy to their 2nd two way contract in Lindy Waters.
Will TyTy prioritize getting an NBA deal or will he be cool with a 2-way deal? Does he have any offset in his NBA contract? If he makes it through waivers he will have already gotten paid for this season. Heck he could just play in the G-league and bet on himself for a team to sign him to an NBA deal from there. I would think it would benefit him more to be a part of an NBA franchise but he might not feel hat way after being dumped by two of them. Reminder that 2-way contract guys have their housing paid for by the team.
TyTy was a guy many of us were looking at drafting in the first round in 2022 but there are gonna be other options as teams dump players with rosters that are full. Maybe the Wolves look to pick up someone they think has a better chance at being worthwhile than TyTy. I’d be cool with that.

TyTy cleared waivers today, and is now a few agent

Re: Last roster spot
I rarely chime in on these sorts of threads.
In part because I don't have much to say about a guy who remarkably has been traded FOUR times already, cleared waivers... and a guy who's reportedly struggled even in summer league.
