Kevin Porter charged with beating up girlfriend

Post by KG4Ever »

It appears that Kevin Porter has been charged with beating up his girlfriend. Miles Bridges was out for a year and lost out on a big contract due to beating up his wife. Unfortunately for Houston, Porter is signed for next three years, though I think its only partially guaranteed after next season. If these allegations are true, I'm expecting KPJ to miss all of next season. Is there a behavior clause in standard NBA contracts or under the NBA's CBA that could allow Houston or the NBA to void it? Can Houston cut him? Houston probably would be better off without him (bad behavior or not) since they signed VanVleet and have Jalen Green. Maybe Houston benefits if they can cut him or suspend him and not have his salary count against the cap.

I am so sick of the proven guilty before proven innocent narrative around charges in the USA today. This goes against everything fought for. We will see what happens.

Who says he is guilty? The reports I read say he was arrested and/or charged with assaulting his girlfriend. The guy will have his day in court. However, its fair to speculate what the consequences are "if he is found guilty" as this affects an NBA team and in all reality, the vast majority of the time, the defendant is found guilty. Probable cause must be found for an arrest.

If he is found guilty, I would be surprised if he didn’t have some behavior clause in his contract because…he has had various issues in the past.

Regardless I’m not sure it makes a huge difference in terms of what they can do to build their roster this season and they have some space to sign FA guys that are left.

I believe its fully guaranteed for the upcoming season (15.86M), but after that only 1M is guaranteed. See Spotrac: https://www.spotrac.com/nba/houston-roc ... -jr-31589/

Kevin Porter has had red character flags surrounding him since the draft. He’s a lottery talent who ended up getting selected at the end of the first round because of those red flags. He’s innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt from a criminal law perspective. But the NBA could take action against him based on the the League’s own investigation using a lower bar of proof.

https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/383 ... -vertebrae

Porter reportedly punched his girlfriend repeatedly in the face and choked her so hard it fractured a vertebrae in her neck.

I suppose she could have made all this up. And maybe she fractured her vertebrae and sustained that cut above her eye accidentally walking into a wall. Or maybe she accidentally ran into his fist. As the article notes, the DA said Porter has a history of violence against this woman. So yes, Porter Jr is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. That means he can’t yet be punished criminally. But let’s not kid ourselves. It’s highly likely that Porter did what has been reported. If he did those things, he should spend many of his remaining years in prison and never again play in the NBA.

Very sad situation if the allegations prove to be true.

As a player, he wasn't very good his first few seasons, but last year he started coming around and had a pretty good all-around season.

A very talented player. But apparently a really shitty person.
