The new CBA has created a 2nd rounder exception that if used, a team can sign a 2nd round pick to a 3 year contract starting at the minimum salary for a 1st year player, or a 4 year contract starting at the minimum salary of a 2nd year player, which is 1,927,896. I am sure Leo's camp will be pushing for a contract starting at this value.

The Wolves have their BAE, along with some left over MLE as well. The minimum salary for a player with 0 years experience is 1,017,781. It would be beneficial to the team to sign Leo for the smaller amount. And so the negotiations begin!

I see the #34 pick, Colby Jones, just signed with Sacramento for four years at 8.76 mil. I am sure Leo's camp, as the #33 pick, will be using that number as a baseline.
Leo…I feel like we need to figure out who are the other 3 ninja turtles are and who is Master Splinter. :)

There are benefits to either of those routes for the Wolves. For the team start cheaper but you can miss out on that 4th year as a cheaper contract. If things go well the player becomes a FA earlier with the 3 year deal. I read that to use the exception for the 4 year deal the 4th year has to be a team option. Both options Seem like a great deals for teams signing these guys.

A 4-year deal for Miller is a no-brainer for the Wolves. I read that the second year minimum is $1,801,769. But whether it’s $1.8M or $1.9M, Miller’s contract isn’t the place to draw the line in an effort to avoid the second apron after next season. That issue will have to be resolved with tough decisions on KAT, Rudy or possibly Naz Reid. The Wolves can sign Miller at $1.9M without exceeding the luxury tax threshold next season. So that’s what they should do. That 4th year for a talented raw 19-year old is well worth paying a few hundred thousand dollars more each year. It’s not like the Wolves will have opportunities to add a lot of young talent through the draft the rest of this decade. They need to keep guys like Miller and Minott as long as possible and hope they develop to their potential.

Did you guys see this from Kevin O’Connor? Very high (somewhat too high) on Leonard Miller:

https://x.com/kevinoconnornba/status/17 ... 1SfRe3pBFA

I love the enthusiasm for Miller, although I think O’Connor’s take is nuts both for assuming Miller is ready and for linking that readiness with trading KAT. I think Miller (if/when he comes into his own) would be the kind of flexible, mobile 4 that can play next to either Rudy or KAT as the 5.

I also think that, if he were on a different team with less on the line, he’d get more NBA playing time and accelerate his development. That’s a problem with the wolves, but it’s a good problem to have. If he got significant NBA minutes, I think he’d surprise everyone and may get one or more votes for rookie of the year. But that’s only going to happen with the Wolves if someone gets hurt. Or traded… I could see Kyle getting traded at the deadline, for example.

We’ve had more than enough “trade Rudy” vs trade KAT” debate, so I won’t get into that in this post.

He's a really interesting prospect. I compare him to "early Vando", before he carved out his niche as a role player that focuses primarily on defense and rebounding. Vando the prospect actually had ball handling and passing skills with the hope that he could eventually develop a 3-point shot. Ultimately, he proved to be too turnover-prone to give playmaking responsibilities to him and he never developed his outside shot. Thus, he didn't see a significant NBA role until he focused exclusively on being a high-energy rebounder and defender.

Miller is a similar lump of clay that shows some intriguing skills in multiple areas, but it's hard to tell which ones he can excel at in a regular NBA rotation role. May be he can break through in more skills than Vando did and become a legit all-around big. Or may be he ends up having to focus on just a couple of things and carve out a role that way. We don't know yet.

Vando is a floor comparison for Miller. I think Miller can be the complete package. He has scary good upside and if he reaches it, the trio of Ant, Jaden and Miller will be fun to watch.
