I’m not shocked. I see Moore as an asset. I haven’t like what I’ve seen from him, but he was a 1st round pick and hasn’t looked terrible. The Wolves coaching staff and front office personnel know Moore inside and out. They see him at practice every day and they must have a sense that he’ll improve. If so, I continue to see him as an inexpensive young player who could add value to an outgoing trade package. At $2.5M he doesn’t really move the salary cap needle significantly.

The more I think about it, I agree what your thoughts are

I don't love this move. Does this make it more likely Moore makes next year's roster and if so, who does he bump assuming we will add a first round pick, Clark and Garza to our roster next year?

It’s not a big deal. It just locks up a young player as an asset on a very cheap contract. He might break through and meet the expectations TC had when he drafted him in which case he could be worth keeping as a cheap player off the bench. Otherwise, he’s easily movable.

I would be surprised if he has any trade value. But if we can cut him next offseason without it impacting our salary cap situation, then I'm ok with it.

That's the thing... We can't cut him next offseason (well, we can cut him, but we still have to pay him for the 2024-25 season). There would likely be vet minimum guys out there that could have filled Moore's role for less money.

Moore is the throw-in to any potential KAT deal this summer

I’m a Wendell Moore guy but he simply hasn’t stood out. However picking up the option for next year makes sense. Why?

It’s a little more than the vet min. Yea if he sucks and they have to cut him in favor of someone better than that would be bad. However he is just as good or better than the guys they brought in to try and compete for a roster spot in training camp and preseason.

Let’s be slightly optimistic and say he progresses to some extent and looks like a guy that is at least worth keeping around. They have another team option for 4.5 million for 2025-2026 and that would make him a RFA following that season. Having those options of keeping a young potentially worthwhile player on your roster has value.

Moore might not be any good and I had hoped he would have shown more progress by now. Of course some guys take a while and he didn’t progress quickly in college either. It’s still his 2nd NBA season. Sometimes teams can benefit from a guy not putting it together right away. NAW is an example of a guy that might end up being reasonably valueable and therefore was SL acquired and signed for cheap. Maybe they will be able to retain Moore cheaply when he hits RFA.

One thing is clear to me that while they wisely had Moore higher in the pecking order of big guards they seem to be looking at other options as well. Of course that guard spot is the biggest question mark long term so it makes sense they keep looking.
