Will the Vikings ever draft and develop a quarterback?

Post by thedoper »

The Vikes have never spent a blue chip (top 10) draft pick on a quarterback. Its insane. Ive never seen such a blatant violation of logic.

Maybe. But not really all that crazy...

They really haven't had a ton of chances. The Vikings have been mostly a solid franchise. They only have nine top 10 picks in the last 50 years.

And I wouldn't put QBs as the team's #1 problem in not making the Super Bowl since 1977. After all, they've had 8 QBs make the Pro Bowl since 1986.

Meanwhile, the Bears have had one since 1985. The Browns have had one since 1987. The NY Jets have 3 since 1991... and all three were retread QBs in their first season with the team well into their 30s. (Esiason, Testaverde, Favre). The Jets have drafted 3 QBs in the top 5 in the past 13 years (Sanchez, Darnold, Wilson). None made a Pro Bowl. Obviously.

I'd say trading away Brad Johnson and Drafting Culpepper at #11 is pretty close to qualifying.

To me the Vikings mistake at drafting QBs the last few years wasn't missing on a top 10 draft pick guy but drafting guys in other spots of the draft. They actually really liked Russell Wilson but passed on him. They could have taken Lamar Jackson. There are others but those are really good QBs that they could have easily taken and they didn't.

To me the most concerning problem with this year's team is I'm not sure they can stop the run.

Who was on the board when we drafted Mike Hughes?

Are you sure you want the answer to that question?

Lamar Jackson was taken a few picks later at 32. I personally thought he was undervalued in that draft but I also thought if you took him you needed to plan to change your offense at some point to utilize his strengths. That was probably part of why he dropped plus there were other QBs taken ahead of him.

You should be drafting a QB every single year unless you have a top 5 QB. Just "rolling with Kirk" was never going to really make the Vikes a real SB contender. He is a solid good but not great QB who has a tendency to consistently melt down when it matters most. Kirk-O-Chains turns into Skirt Cousins when facing pressure (he cannot avoid the rush or run obviously) which is why his record is poor against good teams. Now with an achilles injury I'm ready to see them finally move on. Maybe he even retires, who knows. Kirk was even playing his best football ever, but being a 36 year old and hobbled I can't see the upside anymore in him. He is only going to get less mobile and slower.

Hopefully Hall turns out to be good and shows promise (still highly unlikely considering he is already 25 and a 5th round rookie) but you never know. I'd love to draft Sanders next draft but I think he stays another year at Colorado. They got a new top QB recruit but it's not till 25'. So I think he stays and is probably a top 3 pick next year. Plus I'm sure he's not exactly hurting for money with NIL and his old man is rich too. He doesn't need to leave to make more money really.

From the bits and pieces we have seen from Hall, he can move and his throws have been accurate. So there could be something there. I guess we will find out pretty quickly!

I just finished watching a bunch of interviews with Josh Dobbs. He might be able to drive this offense pretty well! If only we had a running game... (although Dobbs might be able to add something there, too!)

Dobbs and Hall might actually play pretty well. The line has been really good pass protecting and especially when JJ gets healthy this team is probably top 3 arguably first in the league as far as offensive weapons go (RB is very poor sure so I can see top 3).

I won't be surprised if our QBs rush for more yards than our RBs by the end of the season...

The Vikes will likely need to pass quicker, which means more receptions for the RBs. With Mattison's hands, I wonder if this means more opportunities for Akers and/or Chandler?
