Former Wolves Thread

Post by Carlos Danger »

I like to keep track of the guys we let loose. Not that I root against them, but I do hope the Wolves make the right decisions on who to keep and who to not keep. Here's the guys we moved on from that played minutes last season:

1. Bryn Forbes. Out of basketball (also arrested for assaulting his porn girlfriend)
2. Nathan Knight. Currently on a two way contract with Celtics
3. AJ Lawson. Currently on a two way contract with Mavericks
4. Jaylen Nowell. Currently a Free Agent from what I see but sort of confirms Wolves made right call
5. Taurean Prince. Was starting for LA Lakers, but sat out last game with knee soreness.
6. Austin Rivers. Appears to be a Free Agent.
7. DLO. Starting PG for LA Lakers. Will be interesting to monitor that team with DLO/Prince starting.
8. Matt Ryan. Signed a two way contract with Pelicans

So there you have it. Of the eight guys:
* Three guys are out of the league (Forbes, Nowell and Rivers)
* Three guys are on two way deals (Knight, Lawson, Ryan)
* Two guys are starting (DLO and Prince)

To me, the only surprise in Nowell who played a lot of minutes for us last year including the playoffs. The rest of the guys were and still are bottom of the roster guys with the exception of DLO/Prince. I guess it's a bit of a surprise to see both of them starting, but we'll see how that plays out long term as it wouldn't shock me if one or both are eventually moved to bench.

Overall, I don't see any regrets from the guys we moved on from. I was a Nowell fan, but I'm sure glad they didn't over pay to keep him. I do think he'll get another shot somewhere eventually.

Prince would probably not be starting if Vanderbilt was available...

The biggest knock against Prince was durability. He hurt his knee during pregame warmups last night. I have not seen a report on the severity.

Nowell really effed things up, never really figuring out how to defend at a passable level, but even worse, not being able translate elite college shooting into NBA shooting. Put him on the bonepile of other failed Wolves developmental projects where either shooting or defense doomed their prospects. Thankfully, Naz Reid appears to have broken the curse.

I would have predicted that Austin Rivers would land on a playoff team at some point this season. But with his new gig as an announcer, and his podcast stuff... maybe he's making a pivot from the meh player who shockingly ends up in the playoff rotation to a more stable career in front of the mic/camera.

Matt Ryan played 35 minutes last night for the Pels and scored 20 points...6 for 8 on 3 pointers. I thought he was a bad basketball player and was glad to see him go...but damn.

It's one of the most Wolves-ian things ever:

Step 1: Supposed 3-point sniper signs with the Wolves
Step 2: Said player struggles mightily with his shot
Step 3: Wolves eventually give up on player or trade him
Step 4: Player signs with new team
Step 5: Voila! Shot fixed!

Q - I was thinking of you when I saw Matt Ryan’s stats last night. I’ve dismissed your musings on this subject as superstition. But it’s not superstition if it’s real. :)

Good for Matt Ryan. Glad he's having some success there. But i don't think he was a good fit for our roster. The Pelicans have several of their players injured including sharpshooter Trey Murphy. If Pelicans were fully healthy he'd be racking up DNPs. Armoni Brooks is another guy who is kind of a journeyman but when he gets minutes like he did last game, he can go off on a three point heater. As long as the Wolves are healthy we can field a roster that outside of Rudy, has capable three point shooting throughout the rotation. Troy Brown is sort of our Matt Ryan or Brooks who can take on more minutes if there is an injury. Our roster is in good shape and we got a spot open for whatever we might need due to injuries.

Q should look up Matt Ryan’s stats because his scenario is simply untrue. Coming into this season 38.8% from 3 was Matt Ryan’s career high.

Jaylen Nowell is back. Signed deal with the Grizzlies and played 2 minutes of garbage time last night.

Nowell crapped the bed last year when we gave him an opportunity. But his season before that was actually pretty good. So - we shall see if he can dial it back in with his new team.
