NBA Radio

Post by FNG »

I'm a big fan of NBA Radio when I'm on the road or driving around town, and I think some of you are too. I'm starting a thread for interesting or controversial takes we hear during the day. Some will be Wolves-centric as we start to get noticed more.

But first, let's talk about who we like and dislike on NBA radio. I rank the three weekday shows as follows:

1) Scalabrine/Isola
2) Termine/Johnson
3) Kamla/AD

Scalabrine is my favorite...he's knowledgeable about the game and seems to really love talking about it. Kamla is by far my least favorite. His constant deference to Antonio Daniels (even though I find AD insightful) is really annoying. Finally, I get a kick out the phony arguing between Termine and Eddie Johnson...it's manufactured, but I still find myself chuckling when i listen to them.

Great thread, Q.

I’m also an NBA radio fan. My ranking and preferences are completely identical to yours. I love Scalabrine. I also like his sidekick, Isola. The two combine to make a great combo that is really fun to listen to. They’re really insightful but they’re also hilarious. For anyone who hasn’t listened to those two, I highly recommend you tune in and I guarantee you’ll enjoy it and find yourself smiling.

Like you, I enjoy the phone bickering between Termine and Johnson. They’re an entertaining duo.

You refer to Kamala as your least favorite. I can’t use the word favorite in the same sentence as Kamala. I honestly can’t stand him. He’s a wind bag and a pathetic suck up who knows very little and never offers anything remotely informative or insightful. His constant fawning over AD makes we want to vomit. I agree that AD can be insightful, but not that often in my view. And I find him annoying. I should note that AD is high on the Wolves. The other day he praised the Wolves roster as balanced. So I’ll take that as a great insight. :)

Looks like I'm on the same page as FNG and Lip. Scally is my favorite and I'd rank the teams the same way FNG does. However, I'd have a huge gap between JT/Eddie and Kamla/AD. I listen to the top two pairs just about every day. The Scally / Frank show is just all-around a good listen, and Termine / Johnson are funny. Kamla is terrible and AD thinks he's some kind of man of mystery. He continuously makes statements and then pauses for effect (as if to say "see what I did there and how smart I am"). And then he says "you know what I mean?" Yeah AD we get it, it's not like solving the Da Vinci code.

Having the Wolves be relevant makes the discussions more enjoyable. The team is getting more respect and are being talked about more often. I'd recommend tuning in, especially the early morning show.

Cool - Great observation about the AD mystery/intrigue shtick, which is part of why I find him so annoying. The only thing I like about AD is that he’s not Kamala. :). I’ve gotten to the point where I can’t listen to the Kamala/AD show. But I listen to the other two shows every chance I get.

A few things heard on NBA radio recently:

-Someone on the afternoon show pointed out that the formerly hapless Bulls are 8-3 since Zach Lavine went down. Such a talented player, but it does seem that he never makes his teams better. I can't imagine they will get much of a return when they try to move him.

- A Laker fan this morning commented on how good the Wolves looked beating his team last night. He especially praised Bite Bite, saying he is the perfect guy for his team and how he doesn't look any older than he did 15 years ago. I agree with both points.

-Rick Kamla is getting more insufferable every day. As if his incessant "Batman and Robin" comments weren't enough, now he (and AD) are now referring to the third best player on the team as the "Alfred". Cringeworthy.

I agree with you on Kamala. I’ve never been a fan, but he’s definitely gotten far worse over time to the point where he’s become an intolerably annoying caricature of himself. I can’t listen to him at all. His sidekick AD is almost as annoying. I’m sure there are far better alternatives for that time slot and I’m hoping that NBA radio moves on from Kamala and AD at some point.

Micah Nori probably deserves his own thread, but I really enjoyed his interview on the morning show today. I hope you guys are enjoying his halftime interviews...they've become somewhat of an internet sensation. They're calling him the Ted Lasso of the NBA! Last night he said "the Grinch wasn't too interested in Christmas, so he stole our defense instead!". Scal and Isola played a montage of some of his best quips. Rudy talks about one of the reasons for the Wolves turnaround this season is they are having more fun...Nori has a lot to do with that.

But beyond that, he really knows basketball...odd, because he was a baseball guy, not basketball. But somehow he got hired in his early 20s and has been coaching for 25 years. He was most recently with the Detroit Pistons, and my sources tell me they haven't been doing too well since he left.

The NBA Radio guys also had positive things to say about Joe Boylan and Pablo Prigioni, as did Nori. You win with players in this league, but it doesn't hurt to have a good coaching staff too...and it sounds like Finchie has a good one.

It's interesting listening to Austin Rivers on his podcast. He talks fondly about the Timberwolves (even though he's a bit bitter they dumped him)... from the players to the coaches.

He even mentioned not knowing his role until the day of a game (usually a no-no for players), yet still stands behind the Wolves coaching staff.
