Both Morris and Burks are potential buyout candidates, among others, that could benefit the Wolves.

Who says no?

Minnesota Receives: Dejounte Murray, Jalen Johnson and Onyeka Okongwu

Atlanta Receives: Karl Anthony Towns, Shake Milton, Josh Minott and a 2nd RP (2024, likely high 30's)

Murray / Conley
Edwards / NAW
McDaniels / Brown Jr
Johnson / Reid
Gobert / Okongwu

I say no, but the idea is intriguing. It’s a deal I’d make if we were 5th place in the West and seemingly stuck in the mud. But in spite of our recent struggles, we’re still in 2nd place and in the mix for the top spot in the West. And in spite of my doubts about this team’s championship prospects, I can’t ignore where we’re at and would be reluctant to disrupt what is objectively a really good thing.

I also think the deal undervalues KAT. I’m aware of KAT’s flaws, but he’s a highly consistent elite offensive player who rebounds and has greatly improved his defense. Moreover, I think the deal overvalues Dejounte. I liked Dejounte back when there were rumors that TC was interested in trading for him but even then I was against dealing multiple picks to get him. I still like Dejounte based on his stats, skill set and competitiveness, but my opinion of him has declined a bit the last season and a half. He’s currently the second best player on a losing team. Rudy wasn’t very good last season but he’s been fantastic this season. In contrast, Dejounte has failed for a season and a half to be the positive difference maker he was obviously expected to be when Atlanta traded for him. Moreover, he apparently can’t thrive playing next to another high-usage guard so I wouldn’t expect him to fit well with Ant. The Spurs organization is savvy. The fact that they were aggressively shopping Dejounte before last season reinforces my developing doubts about him.

I’ve always liked Okongwu and he’s been steadily improving with more remaining upside to tap. Perhaps the most intriguing piece of the deal for me would be Jalen Johnson - a 22 year old SF who is putting up excellent numbers so far this season.

Having said all that, I think you’ve come up with a very interesting proposal that could be better for the long term and avoid the second apron next season.

Thanks for your feedback Lip. I try to look at these deals from both teams perspective and am trying to think of deals that could be done today OR in the offseason. This one would be more realistically go down after the season being that the Wolves have been so successful. At the end of the day we cannot afford to keep Towns, Ant, Gobert and Jaden without going over the 1st Apron and paying huge luxury tax. The numbers don't add up, and I highly doubt ownership are willing to pay even if we are championship contenders.

I think we'd need to throw in the 2nd RP to get Jalen Johnson AND Okongwu. As you said Johnson is the intriguing piece. Very much like Jaden. Athletic two way player with great length. I know he's highly valued by the Hawks front office. Having those two as your starting forwards would be a pretty deadly duo with huge upside.

Murray would give us our long term starting PG, another two way player, signed to a reasonable deal. Okongwu gives us depth and upside at the PF/C position. It would also shed 10 mil off our cap space so we'd potentially be able to resign Conley and Anderson if they both agreed to pay cuts or MLE's.

After watching the Memphis game I thought about Slo-Mo and fillers for Luke Kennard. Helps to really elevate the offense 3P shooting and spacing, but takes a hit on defense and leadership. I looked it up already and he has a team option for next year so he won't hurt long term Lux cap wise. Memphis is also not going anywhere so they would likely be a seller. Thoughts?

Yeah its no wonder Ant stops passing when Slowmo gives up multiple 3s a game. Kennard would be good too but I wonder if we can get another PG who can shoot with that money. It does thin us out at the 3 if we went Slowmo for a pg.

Luke Kennard would be awesome for this team. You'd then probably have to go get a PG on the buyout market or become more heavily reliant on JMac and NAW.

Umm. I cannot fathom why Memphis would want SloMo for the remainder of this lost season when they can keep Kennard for next year when their team should be healthy. Help me understand why Memphis wouldn’t hang up the phone?

True he has a team option. I imagine the scenario is we pack a combo of young guys/2nds they like.
