I'll have to side with the Rosas detractors on this issue against Kek and Lip. His blunders, led by letting Tyus go so he could force us to watch 4 years of DLo dribbling, far outweigh any moves he made that might be considered brilliant. I never thought there was any other option at #1 than Ant, so I give him about as much credit as I do San Antonio drafting Wemby (I recognize there were some considering Wiseman, but I never understood that). And I don't think the Jaden pick was brilliant either in hindsight. He was a top 10 guy coming out of HS after all with great length and athleticism, and as you said, Bane would have been the better pick. I summarize the Rosas era as follows: a couple disastrous moves which TC has helped us move on from, a couple obvious moves that any one of us could have made, and one stupid affair. D+ grade.Lipoli390 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 08, 2024 12:10 amOK. I wasn’t sure. But while I’d stop short of calling Rosas elite when he was here, I believe he was very good. This Wolves team, which is tied for first in the West, is largely his team. I was sorry to see him leave. He never would have made the Gobert deal and would have instead continued to build organically. When he made mistakes, he was able to move on from them with good deals to improve the team - moving Juancho and Ricky. So I’m a Rosas fan and you have to be impressed by what he’s done with the Knicks.kekgeek wrote: ↑Wed Feb 07, 2024 10:19 pmWasn’t meant to be young and cheek. I think Rosas was an elite GM when it came to drafting/roster building. I mean he traded Covington for Beasley, Vando, the pick that became mcdaniels, Juancho, etc.Lipoli390 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 07, 2024 6:13 pm I didn’t like the DLO deal or letting Tyus walk at the time and I still think those were bad moves with hindsight. I didn’t like Rosas’ re-signing Juancho. And he made a huge blunder trading up for Garland and then talking Culver. I didn’t like the Bolmaro pick at the time either. Actually, I didn’t like the McDaniels pick and wanted Rosas to take Bane. Now with hindsight I can see that Rosas and I were both partially right.
In the end, the Edwards pick forces us to forgive a lot of what Rosas did wrong. The McDaniels pick has also turned out to be savvy as were his decisions to sign Naz and JMac as free agents. I thought Kek’s comment praising Rosas was a bit tongue in cheek, but I’d say Rosas is pretty darn good. TC made the big Gobert move, but he’s really living primarily off of what Rosas handed him — including Ant, KAT, Jaden and Naz as well as all the draft picks and player assets (Vando, Pat Bev, Beasley) TC used to get Gobert. This is still Rosas’ team for good or ill.
He had off the court issues but he was a really good GM

FNG, Even though the Ant pick may have been obvious to you, that was definitely not the case among draft experts. Wiseman, Ant, and Ball were all in the mix. And anyone that saw Ant at Georgia had legitimate concerns about his shot selection, defense, and overall focus. So I give Rosas a ton of credit there.

Fair enough, Q. I do recall much discussion surrounding the pick, but I guess I never understood it (and I can be as wrong about certain things as anyone here ). Even though there were some concerns about Ant, at least we had a lot of video of him to analyze. With Wiseman, all we had was video of him dunking on 6'5" guys in AAU and his 7 games against poor teams in college...it was impossible to project how he would fair against real centers. I gotta think almost all GMs would have looked at him as a huge risk at #1. I'm happy we have Ant, but I just can't give Rosas much credit for picking him. But I'll admit some of his moves that I found disastrous color my impression of anything good he might have done.Q-is-here wrote: ↑Thu Feb 08, 2024 7:50 am FNG, Even though the Ant pick may have been obvious to you, that was definitely not the case among draft experts. Getting away from the Rosas talk, does anybody want to step out and establish themselves as the leader in the West? Many of us here (including me) anointed the Clippers as clearly the best team, and all they needed to do was win a home game against the Pels last night to move into first for the first time this season, but they laid an egg in the first quarter and couldn't get it done. That was a huge loss. The Wolves next game after the Bucks game will be on the Clippers home court...we'll likely be 5-6 point dogs, but it will be a chance for us to really make a statement and prove me wrong about the Clips being the current cream of the crop.

So now my favorite team in the East (Bucks) has both Pat Beverly and Doc Rivers, two guys i despise in the NBA. What did I do to deserve this?

The Nuggets get blown out by the Pelicans, and the Wolves are once again alone in first place. The top 4 on the West are so close, scoreboard watching is mandatory already. Having the home court in games 5 and 7 is critical, so we need to pull out all the stops to remain in first. Huge game coming up on Tuesday!

I was so right... and so wrong... about that draft. I wasn't happy with Edwards nor McDaniels. But I knew Wiseman would be a bust and Haliburton would be good.FNG wrote: ↑Thu Feb 08, 2024 8:08 amFair enough, Q. I guess my favorite thing about all of it was just how wrong Camden was about Wiseman. Overall a good poster who's missed here. But we're all wrong sometimes (obviously). It was always amusing how smug that guy was when he was right... and how much he fought to try to talk himself and others that he wasn't wrong when he was.

Abe, your post reminds me that I'm guilty of revisionist history here in saying picking Ant #1 was obvious. I was also a Haliburton fan (although I never dreamed he would be as good as he's turned out to be) and thought the Wolves should consider trading down to get him and another asset. While I thought Ant was the best player in the draft at the time, hindsight tells us that Haliburton and another asset that we would have gotten in giving up the #1 pick might have been better. For one thing, it would have made it less likely that we would have had to suffer through the DLo years (although DLo has been terrific the past couple weeks!).AbeVigodaLive wrote: ↑Sat Feb 10, 2024 10:34 amI was so right... and so wrong... about that draft. Regardless, I'm not going to give Rosas much if any credit for choosing one of two options that I thought to be relatively easy to choose. Especially in light of his other disasters.
Re: Around the League - '23-24 Season
I think the Mavs were big trade deadline winners. Gafford was such a good get for them - he helps their poor rebounding a ton. He had 17 minutes in his debut (albeit against the equally rebound-inept thunder) and went 19/9 on 7/11 shooting. Mavs fans will be happy to basically never have to see Dwight Powell once lively comes back. PJ washington had a nice debut to with 14/5 in 24 minutes. I could see mavs bumping up to top 2-3 in the west if kyrie and luka can stay healthy.
