Good Stuff Q. These are the stats I look at almost daily from Basketball Reference. Do you get yours from a different source? The reason I ask is I noticed you have Jaden with 0.7 VORP and I know from Basketball Reference he's at zero (and that's part of the reason I've been picking at him a little bit this year).Q-is-here wrote: ↑Fri Feb 16, 2024 8:58 am All-Star Break Update Below:
PER - Very much individual box-score driven and rewards volume more than efficiency. Doesn't really account for defense. This tends to reward higher usage offensive players and guys that get lots of counting stats.
WS/48 - Combines individual box-score stats with team performance; tends to reward efficiency as much as volume; tries to apportion team performance to individual players, so a great team defense for example tends to lift all boats (or weight them down if the defense is poor).
VORP - Value over Replacement Player. A cumulative stat that rewards good players that play lots of minutes. Derives from Box Score Plus-Minus (BPM) which isn't cumulative. I know Carlos likes this one!
Net Rating - Team points per 100 possessions minus opponent points per 100 possessions while player is on the floor.
Player - PER/WS48/VORP/Net Rating
Ant - 19.9/.142/2.7/+10.7
Rudy - 18.8/.211/1.7/+10.3
KAT - 19.5/.166/2.2/+7.9
Conley - 15.5/.194/2.1/+9.3
Jaden- 9.6/.103/0.7/+7.5
NAW - 9.9/.090/.5/+6.3

Re: Key Individual Stats Tracker
Carlos, good catch. I messed up on Jaden and NAW...updates below:
Player - PER/WS48/VORP/Net Rating
Ant - 19.9/.142/2.7/+10.7
Rudy - 18.8/.211/1.7/+10.3
KAT - 19.5/.166/2.2/+7.9
Conley - 15.5/.194/2.1/+9.3
Jaden- 9.6/.084/0.0/+7.5
NAW - 9.9/.103/.7/+6.3
Naz - 15.5/.125/1.1/+8.2
SloMo - 12.3/.121/1.0/+3.8
I get PER, WS/48, and VORP from b-ball reference and Net Rating from NBA.com.
There are a bunch of other stats we could look at as well, but I feel like these combined are good enough to give a pretty well rounded picture.
We've talked about Jaden before, who doesn't do too well in the first three stats, but he has a good net rating so he is playing winning basketball.

No problem. Yeah...I love VORP. I don't completely understand the calculation, but I do feel it's the most accurate of all stats and has the fewest anomalies (IMO).
What I find most interesting is comparing NAW to Jaden. Both guys are similar minutes played and have similar PER. But NAW is now up to .7 VORP and Jaden is still at zero.

Re: Key Individual Stats Tracker
Go look at their assist to turnover ratio and I think that largely explains the difference in VORP.Carlos Danger wrote: ↑Fri Feb 16, 2024 9:41 am No problem. Yeah...I love VORP. Yeah, we like to critique Jaden's rebounding, but I think his playmaking/passing is the weakest part of his game. Hopefully that is something he can work on in the off-season, but it could also be more an IQ thing and he will always be terrible at it...Q-is-here wrote: ↑Fri Feb 16, 2024 9:56 amGo look at their assist to turnover ratio and I think that largely explains the difference in VORP.Carlos Danger wrote: ↑Fri Feb 16, 2024 9:41 am No problem. Re: Key Individual Stats Tracker
Before Cool beats me to it, in Jaden's defense, he doesn't get the same ball handling responsibilities that NAW gets, so he isn't going to get many assists. The problem is given how little he does handle the ball and his limited shot attempts, he turns it over quite a lot...Not in absolute terms, but as a percentage of his FGAs and Assists.60WinTim wrote: ↑Fri Feb 16, 2024 10:00 amYeah, we like to critique Jaden's rebounding, but I think his playmaking/passing is the weakest part of his game. Re: Key Individual Stats Tracker
Good discussion. Yep. It's what I love about VORP. It captures the "do shit" stats. You correctly pointed out the differences between the two with regard to Assists. And yes, part of that is opportunity as NAW was sort of used as a defacto PG at times. But almost all of us have been dismayed with the lack of rebounding. JMac has a 6.5% total rebound percentage...which is over a full percent higher than Jaden. That shouldn't happen - especially considering the size differential of the two!Q-is-here wrote: ↑Fri Feb 16, 2024 10:07 amBefore Cool beats me to it, in Jaden's defense, he doesn't get the same ball handling responsibilities that NAW gets, so he isn't going to get many assists. Here is the latest update, through 66 games, sorted by total minutes played on the season:
Player - PER/WS48/VORP/Net Rating
Ant - 19.7/.132/3.1/+8.9
Rudy - 18.9/.212/2.0/+8.8
KAT - 19.1/.158/2.4/+8.0
Conley - 15.2/.181/2.3/+6.4
Jaden- 9.2/.079/-0.2/+4.5
Naz - 15.8/.128/1.4/+6.7
NAW - 10.7/.108/.9/+6.0
SloMo - 12.3/.117/1.0/+3.9
*McLaughlin - 15.4/.179/.7/+5.0*
- I continue to maintain that Rudy is the team's MVP for the season.
- NAW's numbers keep creeping in an upward trajectory. Jaden's keep creeping in a downward trajectory.
- I added McLaughlin to the list since he's played in a critical mass of games and minutes and has been critical of late with Monte being out. I wonder if Finch will keep going with JMac as Conley's primary backup once Morris is healthy. He is definitely making a case for himself. His PER, Win Shares per 48 minutes, and VORP are all above league average. And the team is a solid +5 per 100 possessions when he's on the floor.
- Ant is often given the "superstar" moniker by some pundits that see the home run balls he hits, but his cumulative stats tell a different story. Is he an all-star? For sure. But go compare his numbers to Jokic, SGA, or even Jayson Tatum. He's not there yet. Yes, he's capable of taking the team on his back and winning you a game and making some great highlight plays, but he has his fair share of klunkers (e.g. the Cleveland game) that keep him at a distance from the real elite players.
- It's fair to conclude that Jaden's season has been a disappointment and he is not living up to the contract he signed. The defense is still there, but we need more from him.

You hit it on the head from my perspective with Edwards. "Not there yet". He's still only 22. Still....he's already absolutely an All Star and keeps getting better.Q-is-here wrote: ↑Thu Mar 14, 2024 9:44 am Here is the latest update, through 66 games, sorted by total minutes played on the season:

I love the fact that he keeps stacking year over year improvements in his metrics. It's why I have been down on Jaden this year. But Edwards continues to build on what he's done so we can dream about how high his star might still rise.
Re: Key Individual Stats Tracker
Yup, the trajectory is there for Ant and if you look at current and past superstars, they usually don't start peaking until their 5th or 6th season, so he still has time for more improvement. But I think some NBA analysts that don't watch him every night and don't deep dive into stats (e.g. like Shaq!) will see him make a Jordan-esque type play and then declare him a superstar. Well, you can have the "it" factor as Ant certainly does, but that doesn't mean "it's" there every night! Guys like Jokic and Doncic have great games 80-90% of the time, not 40 or 50 or 60% of the time. They are almost never not great.Carlos Danger wrote: ↑Thu Mar 14, 2024 9:53 amYou hit it on the head from my perspective with Edwards. "Not there yet". He's still only 22.
