Nadir Hifi

Post by Monster »

It's 2 summer league games but this guy is exceeding my expectations on both ends of the ball based on the info I had. His defense was waaaaay better than advertised. It's 2 summer league games tho...but still!!! Lip already said he will be a star I'm on the band wagon and I'm bringing snacks!

So will the Wolves sign him? Should they?

I know the Wolves are up against it in terms of salary however it's worth considering that if they signed Hifi or another rookie to a vet min for a guy with no NBA experience that's only 1.157 million or something like that. Yes that expands quite a bit to what over 4 million with the luxury tax but they could also cut PJ Dozier and his partial guaranteed money if they want to save money and they don't think they need him. Signing Hifi to an NBA deal would be cheaper than adding Nix to an NBA deal sign he has multiple years of NBA service time and signing Hifi to a 2-way deal.

Let's take a theoretical step into what the Wolves could have accomplished if they consider signing Hifi to an NBA deal. What if the Wolves traded away #37 for what ended up being a future 2nd, some cash, over 10 million in total savings because of the luxury tax for he who will not be named and then they sign Hifi a promising young guard for what ends up being around 6 million cheaper? Sounds good to me. We will see what happens and if Hifi keeps looking like a guy we should be keeping around.

We already have Conley and Dillingham....not sure it makes sense to sign another undersized guard that we may struggle to find minutes for. I do think it was smart to bring him in though since he offered an up close and personal roadmap for Dilly on how to be an effective shot creator and defender at that size.

I saw Lip throw out the JJ comp, but I lean more towards Jose Alvarado, who has been a very useful player.

It's true our PG room is stocked with undersized players. But when you consider Conley is short term and you just don't know if Dilly is destined for the starting role or a super sub off the bench, it's not a bad idea to try and hang on to Hifi.

Hifi apparently had other Summer League opportunities, but he and his agent chose the Wolves. Although I am not sure their goal was seeking a long term commitment with the Wolves, but merely the most logical destination that provided an opportunity to showcase himself with a team that could go pretty far in Summer League.

I'm not sure what maneuvering the Wolves would need to do to retain his services.

The other roadblock is Daishen Nix, who I haven't been a big fan of, but let's face it, he's obviously impressed the Wolves and offers up a different look at PG with his size and defense. If I were Hifi's agent, there just doesn't seem to be any opportunity to get run with the Wolves A-team unless multiple guys are hurt.

We do have an open roster spot that we also didn't use at the start of the season last year. Last season we didn't use it because it would have put us into the luxury tax and it gave us flexibility to sign a bought out player. This season we are already in the 2nd tax apron and unless we plan to do a 1 for 2 trade, as a 2nd tax apron team we are not allowed to sign bought out players that made at least the mle this season. If we signed him to the cheapest deal I believe it would cost about 4 million in additional taxes. Do we know if Dozier was an actual contract or and training camp deal? If it's just a training camp deal, we can always move on from him.

I want to make sure we're talking about the same Hifi guy. Are we talking about the undersized PG who had no assists in 14 minutes of a summer league basketball game Sunday?

Jon K reports that Hafi is leaving summer league due to a family emergency. Gotta hope everything turns out fine, but I suspect that is the end of the Hafi run.

Hifi, gets a G League roster, which is great for him, but I just don't see him making an NBA roster. He's too small and he hasn't stood out in any meaningful way. Keep in mind that there are lots of Summer League stars that never sniff the NBA and I wouldn't even call this guy a Summer League star. Best case he gets a two-way spot, but more likely he makes some decent coin in the G-League or plays internationally.
