Re: Trade deadline discussion thread
Gafford is available for a perimeter defender. I'm sure Dallas would love to get NAW from us, but there really isn't a way to get that done in one trade since we can't combine players in a single trade. I wonder if there is a trade where Julius goes to a team say Washington, Detroit etc and a guard/wind defender goes back to Dallas with Gafford coming here to play back up center behind Rudy.
Re: Trade deadline discussion thread
It’s my view that the Wolves should try to trade Randle or NAW by the deadline. If we can trade Randle without giving up any picks for enough cap relief to have a chance at re-signing both NAW and Naz, then that would be my first choice. Otherwise, I think we should trade NAW by the deadline so we can get some value for him because after the deadline we’ll definitely lose him to free agency unless Randle shocks the world by not opting in. That trading NAW before the deadline is our only chance to get value for him. And let’s not kid ourselves, the Wolves are not a championship contender this season.
One team that should be interested in NAW is Indiana. They’re in the thick of the race for playoff seeding as high as #3. Their offense has been terrific. Defense is where they’re not performing well. Moreover, the Pacers don’t have a solid SG behind Mathurin. NAW would give them a huge boost to their defense and a great 6th man backup to Mathurin. One trade that makes sense to me would be NAW for Ben Sheppard + Indiana’s 2028 lottery-protected 1st or the following 2nd round picks: Utah’s 2027, Dallas’ 2028 and Indiana’s 2029.
I’d still explore trading Randle by the deadline even if we’re able to trade NAW. A deal I’d like would be Randle to Detroit for Harris and Toronto’s 2025 2nd but I’d settle for Detroits 2027 2nd plus the Mavs 2028 2nd.

Re: Trade deadline discussion thread
The Wolves are 3.5 games out of home court in the first round of playoffs… I don’t think the Wolves will make a move that is a step back this season, even if it’s a good set up for next year. If things weren’t so tight, I’d think that kind of trade may be more likely.
Re: Trade deadline discussion thread
One could make an argument that there are "green shoots" emerging from the ashes of a season burned by unmet expectations. It doesn't really show in the record yet and may be it's completely illusory.Sundog wrote: ↑Sun Jan 19, 2025 9:43 am The Wolves are 3.5 games out of home court in the first round of playoffs… I don’t think the Wolves will make a move that is a step back this season, even if it’s a good set up for next year. We're the #8 offense in the NBA during the month of January so far. Unfortunately the defense is #19 during that time, thus we remain barely above .500. But we know what the defense is capable of. I wasn't sure our offense was capable of sustained excellence, but we have five straight games of scoring 115 points or more. Is it just hot shooting or are there real changes that can be sustained?

Four team trade:
Minnesota Receives: Myles Turner and Marvin Bagley III
Indiana Receives: Nikola Vucevic and CHI 2nd RP (via Sac 2028)
Chicago Receives: Julius Randle
Washington Receives: Patrick Williams and MIN 2nd Round (via Utah 2025)

Re: Trade deadline discussion thread
I might be willing to give up our Utah 2nd rounder for that deal, but I don’t see why Chicago would do it. They’d be trading a talented young player, Patrick Williams, Nikola Vucevic and two second rounders for Julius Randle. Doesn’t seem realistic. But I like the thought.

Re: Trade deadline discussion thread
The Jimmy market has begun to accelerate according to Windy. 3 and 4 team deals being constructed. I gotta think the Wolves and Julius are in the mix.
Re: Trade deadline discussion thread
Here is a very "under the radar" move the Warriors made. They traded for Dennis Schroder before December 17th using a trade exception. This means he is eligible to be traded on February 5th, the day before the trade deadline. This is important because the Warriors can now acquire Jimmy Butler with only trading away 3 players, one of which is Schroder's expiring 13 mil deal.
Toronto has openly expressed interest in helping facilitate a Jimmy Butler trade. Enter the Wolves!
- The Warriors get their guy, Butler, for a last swan song with Steph.
- The Raptors get their homie, Wiggins.
- Miami gets Randle and Schroder.
- The Wolves have to waive a player (or trade a player for a draft pick?), and get Payton II (expiring), Boucher (expiring) and Olynyk.
I'll the front offices work out any draft compensation needed to get the deal done...
This puts NAZ in the starting lineup and adds front court depth for both Rudy and NAZ. And Payton gives us some depth in the back court in lieu of DDV's long term absence.
You can thank me later!
