If we did that you probably want to make another trade, because that would put us just over 3 million over the 2nd luxury tax this year and it would pay to get under it.

I think Detroit would probaly be cool having Mike Conley on their roster but they are gonna make you pay for having to pay him over 10 million next year although it looks to me like Conley has been playing better the past few weeks. The Pistons likely will have better offers to use their valuable cap space than that.

I agree with the idea that moving Conley makes sense. I think his value as a vet is important especially for Dillingham but yeah moving his contract makes sense.

With DDV out for a while will the Wolves dig in and still hope to have a good season or will that make them a little more likely to play of the future? Making a trade for the future doesn't mean this season is over either. Maybe the younger players end up helping more than you expected.

The internet chatter (Ira Windman) thinks the Suns trading their unprotected 2031 1st to Utah for 3 first round picks was done in preparation for a Butler trade.

The only way Butler gets to Phoenix is if Beal waives his no-trade clause. Somebody commented the Lakers is one team Beal would accept. (Ira speculated it is the Bucks).

Toronto wants in on the trade to make it work. Although I can make a deal work when including the Wolves, it's really nothing to get excited about...

So on to a very simple trade proposal that I may have mentioned before:

Randle and the Detroit pick to Utah for Collins and Kessler. Thoughts?

I wouldn't pay anything. This would need to be a desire by Detroit to propel themselves firmly into the playoff race and replace their Ivey minutes since he's injured. The Pistons are reportedly not renting out their capspace but are instead buyers. They would need to view Conley as a valuable asset or it likely wouldn't work.

Houston may also want a vet backup for VanVleet. Their other pure PG is rookie Reed Sheppard, who started ahead of Rob Dillingham at PG for Kentucky last season and drafted third overall, is struggling and they are having to use Aaron Holiday. Mmmm, isn't that ironic that Dillingham is surging as golden boy Sheppard is struggling!?

So I think Kek might be onto something. I haven't looked up and down every playoff roster but there are two right there. Houston more than OKC could use an old head like Conley. Between him and VanVleet they would always have a ton of poise and experience for floor generals.
Reed didn't start at Kentucky, both Rob and Reed came off the bench.
My mistake. Wow, that's kind of crazy for what ended up being the #3 and #8 picks in the draft! He did play more minutes than Dillingham.

Love Kessler as Rudy's backup (and potential successor)....not so sure about Collins and isn't he similar to Randle in that he'd expect to start? Seems like we could kiss Naz goodbye if we had Collins. And lastly, I thought Collins had somewhat of a loser reputation, meaning a guy with decent talent and stats but just doesn't do the little stuff that leads to winning basketball. I could be wrong on that or may be he's matured.

Also, if Utah just gave up three first rounders for a future first, it feels like they are trying to winnow down the sheer number of rookies/youth they are bringing in, so why would they then want the Detroit pick?

The 3 picks Utah traded are all guaranteed to be at the end of the draft. They are gambling that the Phoenix unprotected 2031 pick will be much more valuable than any of the 1st rounders they sent out. The Detroit pick would be attractive because it looks to be in the middle of the draft.

Collins is not as strong a player as Randle, but his skillset is different. Randle needs the ball to be effective. Collins can be more of a catch and shoot PF, shooting over 40% on 3s this season. He's still pretty young, too, at 27.

There should be some stat out there that reflects how much a defense respects a player's ability to shoot the 3, regardless of what said player's percentage or volume is. One thing I notice with Randle - and I wonder if the same applies to the lower volume Collins - is that most defenses just don't care if he takes an open 3. They seem to welcome that shot over an Ant drive to the hoop.

Collins is only taking a little over three 3's per game, so how much does he really space the floor and are teams all that worried about him out there?

Naz on the other hand is a high volume 3-point shooter and pretty damn accurate. He creates gravity that Randle doesn't.

I honestly haven't seen Utah play much so I can't speak to the gravity (or lack thereof) that Collins creates, but the whole point of having a PF that can shoot is to open up driving lanes for Ant (and now Dillingham!). But that doesn't happen if teams really don't guard him out there and stay in their defensive shell.

Great point, Q! As everyone knows, I was a huge fan of Collins in his draft class but I’ve soured on him. I agree with you that Collins doesn’t really fit as well as he might appear. And I continue to suspect other issues with him that make him a guy you don’t want on your team.

Three way Randle deal (MN, Detroit, Orlando):

Wolves Get: Tobias Harris, Toronto 2025 2nd, better of Dallas & Detroit 2027 2nd, removal of protections on Detroit 1st from Detroit, and Gary Harris from Orlando
Benefits: (1) $4.3 million salary savings next season (Gary Harris is on expiring contract with team option); and (2) Harris is better fit than Randle with Rudy and Ant; (3) certainty on Detroit pick and replenishing draft cupboards.

Orlando Gets: Randle
Benefits: More offensive firepower for a team that has the lowest PPG average in the League.

Detroit Gets: Jonathan Isaac from Orlando and NAW from MN
Benefits: (1) get a talented young PF to pair with Duran at C; and (2) get defense, some offense and depth at SG with Ivey out for the rest of the season. Detroit gets the best of this deal in players, which justifies giving up draft capital to the Wolves who get the least out of the deal from a player perspective.
