Trade deadline discussion thread
Re: Trade deadline discussion thread
Moore and Robson spent a lot of time on this week's pod discussing possible moves at the deadline, and Robson made an interesting observation. He said that his conversations with scouts and GMs around the league have him convinced that TC is the most connected GM in the Association. He is constantly on the phone talking with his counterparts talking about what their needs are. Knowing what they are looking for puts him in a position to make quick deals on draft night or at the trade deadline, because he's not going to go to another GM with a deal they wouldn't at least consider. Gives him a lot of credibility. We don't know if he is going to stand pat or make a move at the deadline, but I'm confident he will make the right move if he's not satisfied with the roster as it stands now.

Interesting info, FNG. “This team is in every game it plays. I don’t see a trade out there that makes the Wolves markedly better or a sell move that drastically improves their position going forward without them incentivizing a team to help them. It may not be popular, but it may be what makes the most sense.” — Jon Krawczynski
Re: Trade deadline discussion thread
Yeah, that is probably true, and kind of how I felt up until that Golden State game. But our recent play, and especially last night, has me back on the "this could work" bandwagon. But I still feel it's a coin flip as to whether TC does something at the trade deadline. That player option is one factor to consider, which is why I struggle to figure out how to embrace this team until we see the roster makeup after Feb 6th...Sundog wrote: ↑Sun Jan 26, 2025 8:04 am “This team is in every game it plays. I really don't see NAW returning next year -- there just isn't room for him among our depth of guards/wings.

Sorry for quoting myself...60WinTim wrote: ↑Sat Jan 25, 2025 12:54 pm I do have a new favorite trade leveraging off of Butler. I like to think it makes sense for every team involved, but I won't go into those topics here. Some of the players involved are there to make salary matching work, but also fit positional needs for the teams involved. Some draft compensation may be needed, but I see no reason for the Wolves to pony up the Detroit pick.
Miami trades Butler; receives Randle and Schroder
Golden State trades Wiggins, Schroder, SloMo and Looney; receives Butler and Davion Mitchell
Minnesota trades Randle; receives SloMo, Olynyk and Boucher (a player must be waived: Garza or Ingles)
Toronto trades Olynyk and Boucher; receives Wiggins and Looney (via trade exception)
I really like what this does for the Wolves. Naz moves into the starting lineup. Olynyk backs up Rudy. And we get the SloMo chemistry back into the mix.
I see Miami and Golden State as the more desperate teams. Just like the Lakers were desperate with Westbrook, leading to the DLo trade.
But I have to update my favorite trade by adding a 5th team based on some of the ideas floating around on the interweb. Instead of Butler going to Golden State, he goes to Phoenix. And Phoenix sends Durant to Golden State. The salaries still all work out. And a return of Durant to Golden State seems like a fitting way for he and Steph to close out their careers!
Re: Trade deadline discussion thread
I'm guessing TC is open to trading Julius but has his price set and that includes picks for certain packages only. I also believe he will trade NAW if there isn't a plan to resign him. I think a key consideration still is that Julius can be traded this summer as an expiring contract, which opens the door to keeping NAW if he wants. This will give everyone the rest of the season and the playoffs to evaluate.60WinTim wrote: ↑Sun Jan 26, 2025 9:11 amYeah, that is probably true, and kind of how I felt up until that Golden State game. But as TC showed with the KAT trade, he will make the move he is waiting for whenever it is available.
Re: Trade deadline discussion thread
Expiring contracts (with or without options) CANNOT be traded after the season except in a sign-and-trade, which isn’t available to the Wolves because they’re over the 2nd apron. In other words, if the Wolves are going to trade Randle before next season it will have to happen by 3:00 p.m. Eastern on February 6. Assuming Randle opts in as I’m almost sure he will, the Wolves won’t be able to trade him until at least Dec. 15.Phenom wrote: ↑Sun Jan 26, 2025 11:18 amI'm guessing TC is open to trading Julius but has his price set and that includes picks for certain packages only. The Wolves are in essentially the same position with NAW. If they don’t trade him by the Feb. 6 trade deadline, they would have to re-sign him as a free agent, in which case Wolves would clearly stay over the 2nd apron if Randle opts in and we keep Naz, or let him walk as a free agent with nothing in return. As I see it, trading NAW by the deadline is imperative if we don’t trade Randle. NAW likely has significant trade value that would be wasted if he isn’t traded by Feb. 6.

Via Google: “If a player "opts in" on their contract, meaning they choose to exercise their player option and remain with the team for another season, then they can be traded immediately after they opt in, with no additional waiting period“
Randle is not signing a new contract, he is exercising his option, no new contract is being made. With naw we can’t sign and trade (a new contract of being made) because we are a second apron team.
Re: Trade deadline discussion thread
This is correct Kek. Randle's option isnt a new contract and is immediately tradeable as soon as it's exercised.kekgeek wrote: ↑Sun Jan 26, 2025 7:11 pmLip I think you are wrong about Randle.Lipoli390 wrote: ↑Sun Jan 26, 2025 5:04 pmExpiring contracts (with or without options) CANNOT be traded after the season except in a sign-and-trade, which isn’t available to the Wolves because they’re over the 2nd apron. Lip, you may be thinking of qualifying offers. Those have trade restrictions.
Re: Trade deadline discussion thread
To further the point that Randle opting in is not a sign and trade. Keita Baits Diop opted in to his Hornets deal this off-season. You have 48 hours to conduct a sign and trade. However Baits-Diop was traded months later (In the Kat trade) and they did not need to wait until Dec 15th to trade him after a "sign and trade" did not happen within 48 hours. Making Randle trading Randle possible after he opts into his contract.Phenom wrote: ↑Sun Jan 26, 2025 7:19 pmThis is correct Kek.
