I've been pondering if OKC would have made a better offer for Luka. If you're OKC would you give up a portion of your stockpile and some of your young players? Would you be willing to move Jalen Williams? Or would you take the if it's not broke don't fix it stance?Coolbreeze44 wrote: ↑Sun Feb 02, 2025 4:22 pmThe league is loving this trade. From the rumors, the Mavs called the Nuggets about trading Doncic for anyone not the Joker to put those 2 together. The Nuggets said no. Who else has a superstar that could help the Mavs win this year that is willing to trade for him? I think the Heat said No fucking way to a Butler for Doncic trade. Why trade one headache for another?

I think a lot teams would have made better offers. Mikal Bridges brought 5 #1 picks. Does that mean Luka would be worth 10?Volans19 wrote: ↑Sun Feb 02, 2025 5:13 pmI've been pondering if OKC would have made a better offer for Luka. Seems like Miami could have put together a compelling package centered on Butler + Jovic + picks.

I think you might want to spend some time learning about Max Christie before you dismiss him as just a 2nd round pick.Volans19 wrote: ↑Sun Feb 02, 2025 2:31 pmI mean yeah Max Christie might be decent I'm not familiar with his game, but he was a second round pick not like he has that top tier lottery potential.Monster wrote: ↑Sun Feb 02, 2025 1:23 pmAnother person that doesn't even mention Max Christie as part of the trade.Q-is-here wrote: ↑Sun Feb 02, 2025 12:43 pm
To Volans point, the issue isn't as much that Dallas traded Luka (which, yes, is somewhat shocking in its own right). The issue is what they got in return. I mean, seriously!?! AD is obviously a great player, but he's starting the tail end of his career and is probably as injury-prone as Luka. And they already have an outstanding defensive Center in Dereck Lively II, who is still super young and will probably keep getting better. And all they could get was a 1st rounder kicked in! Absurd!
So what I can't believe is that there wasn't a better deal available. Remember that even though this directly benefits the Lakers, if it leads to more overall views and clicks for the NBA, ALL franchises benefit in terms of appreciating values.
Color me suspicious as well!
The Mavs clearly didn't want to rebuild and that makes sense based on their roster. AD is pretty valuable player. In 2024 he was first team defense and 2nd team all NBA and he has been very good this season as well. Were the Mavs supposed to trade Luka for basically a bunch of draft picks? AD can play either C or PF and having too many of those seems like a good problem to have. Is the goal to try and win games or is it to win the most draft picks and supposed "value" in the deal?
Again I ask the question if a team was gonna trade for AD what do you think the price was gonna be?
I'm not concerned about the price for AD I'm concerned about the price of Luka. Yeah he has had injury concerns but he is one of the most talented basketball players of the modern day. Having 6 years of runway with Doncic means you have a high probability of success for 6 years, I wouldn't say the same for AD.
The biggest market in the league essentially getting a reset for AD and a future first insane. The Lakers will always be a team that can round out the edges of the roster for less than most (especially when they don't have Lebron as their defacto gm).
Maybe this trade will make more sense when the deadline passes but I believe the Mavs made an all time blunder here
Edit: Sorry that came off poorly. My point is that Max Christie has been a legit rotation player for the Lakers this year and is trending towards being a pretty nice player and he is locked into a fairly reasonable deal. I'd compare it to how few people here were excited about NAW initially and then realized he was more than a throw in. Christie is more valuable than that which is good considering the Doncic trade is a little more consequential than the Russell deal.

Re: Donic traded oh my!
FWIW I'm not sure how far out Miami would have 1st round picks available to trade. They owe protected picks in 2025 and 2027. Dallas probably has little interest in paying Butler past this year so I doubt that would have much appeal for them.

The RealGM website has attracted so much attraction because of the Doncic and Fox trades that I can no longer access it.

Luka on the Lakers is Ric Flair teaming up with Roddy Piper....Doncic will be the greatest Heel in the history of the NBACoolbreeze44 wrote: ↑Sun Feb 02, 2025 3:37 pm The league has it's hands all over this deal. I still question if Doncic is an asshole and lazy to boot as the real reason teams didn't ask or flat turned down any offers.
Stefon Diggs in the NFL keeps getting run out of town in the NFL. Colin Kapernick could never get another gig after his decisions.
Getting stuck with a $71 million asshole would make most GMs sick to their stomachs. Would Doncics contact been like John Wall and Bradley Beal and completely destroy a franchise for years to come? The Wizards are still in hell and neither of those guys are there, with Wall being paid to not play.
Hopefully this hurts both the Lakers and Mavs and helps the Wolves gain ground in the race to the top 6.
