The Death Lineup? (DDV-Ant-Jaden-Ju-Naz)

Post by Phenom »

I've come across 2 stats today that this 5 man lineup has the highest offensive rating and defensive rating. That's pretty awesome, if true.

Phenom, for the playoffs or for the season? Here are the best 5-man lineups for the Wolves this season for lineups with mire than 100 minutes.

Mike/Rudy/Naz/Jaden/Ant: net rating of 26
Mike/Rudy/Donte/Naz/NAW: 23.5
Donte/Rudy/Ant/Naz/NAW: 15.4
Donte/Randle/Ant/Naz/NAW: 11.7
Donte/Rudy/Jaden/Naz/Ant 10
NAW/Rudy/Jaden/Randle/Ant: 8
Donte/Rudy/Jaden/Randle/Ant: 4.6
Mike/Rudy/Jaden/Randle/Ant: 3.2

Rudy has been terrible on offense in the playoffs, but he is in 7 of our 8 best lineups in the regular season!

But in the playoffs, you're correct! The death lineup has a net rating of 53.3 in 22 minutes! During the regular season though. they were not so good...a net rating of minus 4.3 in 113 minutes.

Matchups matter. But so does Jaden's in-season transformation into a legit two-way threat and Donte's slow start. I'm sure the first couple months of the regular season weighed down that 5-man lineup combo's net rating.

Not to mention the “death lineup” has seen a lot of minutes when the Lakers have been worn down late in games…

As an aside, I have been surprised at how un-impactful NAW has been in the playoffs, relegated to low man on the rotational totem pole. I don’t see a path to retaining him this offseason.

Ya small sample size and matchup are huge in these numbers. I believe the “death lineup” was the wolves worst consistent regular season lineup this year. I would say Conley, Rudy and Naw have been the wolves 3 worst players this series but if the wolves and warriors close it out (long ways to go) I think all 3 players could be talked about as the biggest impacts on winning next series.

Yes, good clarification. It is for the playoffs.

The other thing to note about the death lineup is that they are playing an opposing lineup that doesn't have a true big and isn't running a lot of high pick and rolls. In fact, the sole purpose of any high screens is for them to hunt a better matchup for Luka (like Naz, but he held his own in the 4th). It's the total opposite of what we saw playing against the Dallas version of Luka.

So it's nice to see us play effective defense without Rudy on the floor. It's just too bad he hasn't been more of a factor offensively thanks to his HORRIBLE hands this series. What happened to the improved hands he had at the end of the regular season? He literally can do nothing but slap at the ball.

I'm a little surprised but in a way I am not. I don't think he is a great match up defensively on either Luka or LeBron. Like Donte and Conley he has struggled with his shot but he offers less than those other guys offensively. Still he is playing legit minutes on a playoff team and has contributed worthwhile minutes in at least a couple of the games despite struggling with his shot. His struggles this playoffs are likely costing him some some money...which might make him easier to retain. I expect him to move on elsewhere because he will get a better offer plus the Wolves have a couple young players that have shown some real signs of being able to pick up minutes when he leaves.
