New Iowa Head Coach: Mahmoud Abdelfattah

Post by 60WinTim »

Sure hope he produces a more competitive team than we've seen down there the last couple years!

He has an interesting background that I won't go into here. He has coached in the G-League before, and most recently came from the NBL (Australia), so might be familiar with Rocco's game.

He is a guy with a legit track record and has so E ties to the area.

As for last year's G-league team they were killing it when they had a roster with some talent and then that started dropping off and the record plummeted. Coaching is great but no matter the level there does have to be some talent. Still it was pretty brutal record much of the last 2 years.

I'll add that regardless of the coaching staff and overall success of the Iowa Wolves record it seems like they have a decent track record of developing some players into a better version of themselves at that level. They have had several guards that were poor 3 point shooters improve that skill in some cases improve their efficiency overall. A few players have been selected by other teams to be 2-way guys after been nowhere near being on anyone's Radar as possible NBA players.

In a minor move a while back Iowa traded the returning rights of Trevor Keels (someone that improved his offensive game in Iowa) for Zyon Pullin and a G-league draft pick. Pullin's scouting report has him as a game manager low turnover true PG with size and ability to defend. One place compared him to Tyus Jones and Monte Morris although he is taller than those guys.

I'd say the results of the Iowa affiliate has been.....OK-ish at best.

As far as I can tell, it has yielded only three success stories since the Wolves first got its own affiliate in Iowa 8 years ago: Naz Reid, Jordan McLaughlin, and Jaylen Clark. And two of those guys were undrafted! We've had a lot of 2nd rounders and other two-way guys basically just come and go without ever really breaking through with the Wolves or another NBA team.

Man, Nojel Eastern has just been a stalwart for the Iowa Wolves. I always think of the G-League as a very transient league where guys are either on 2-ways, scrapping for 10-day deals, or getting a cup of coffee before heading overseas, never really staying with one squad for more than a season or two. This will be Nojel's 3rd year with Iowa as a full-time G-Leaguer.

As for the rest of the roster, not much to get excited about. It would seem unfair to have Juzhang play a ton down there other than to stay in game shape, as he is practically an NBA vet after a couple years in Utah's rotation. Rocco is probably the guy worth checking out. My hope is they use him as an offensive hub, as he seems to have some nice passing insticts and a decent shooting touch.
