Wow, so this Mike trade may have lowered our payroll, giving us some flexibility to make a trade (and saving Lore and ARod some tax money and making some cash), and whether or not we end up using that flexibility to make a trade, we might still get Mike back, presumably on a vet. minimum?

So, like, we gave up swap rights to our pick this summer to basically get someone else to pay Mike's salary for the rest of the year for the flexibility it gave us? I mean, if we end up using that flexibility to add depth, great. If not, I guess that swap right is not likely to hurt us unless we start dropping precipitously in the standings and Chicago starts rising, correct?

The whole thing is kind of weird. We didn't really give up anything of real value (that pick swap is unlikely to convey) and somehow stuck someone else with the bill for Conley's contract? It's just interesting. Again, this is kind of assuming we re-sign Mike, which I have to imagine is what we want right? It's also kind of assuming TC knew that Chicago was going to move Mike later too, but I suppose it's also possible he was just betting on that.

Actually, the pick swap is with Detroit. So we could drop quite a few spots since Detroit's pick is currently #29. However, the swap is protected if the Wolves slot falls below 20. So, the most we can drop is 9 spots...

Ahh, got it. That makes more sense . . . unfortunately.

So, TC did the whole Mike thing to gain cap flexibility, either for a trade and/or signing a guy on the buyout market (without the MLE limitation). What do people think TC is up to?

From our perspective, the number one need for this team is bench scoring. A lingering problem is our non-Rudy defense. The tandem of Randle and NAZ is pretty bad on the defensive end. Is TC going to address both those problems?

One reason Randle was acquired was for his playmaking ability to put alongside ANT. Has Jaden progressed enough to supplant Randle as a player maker, making Randle dispensable?

Of course, an opportunity to acquire Giannis trumps all those problems. Get Giannis and figure it all out later!

For me, Giannis is a better playmaker than Randle. He also gains so much more attention that more people are even more wide open when he passes.

The Wolves moved beneath the 1st apron by trading Mike Conley to Chicago without receiving anything in return.

Without dipping beneath the 1st apron, the Wolves would not have been able to make this trade for Ayo Dosunmu -- because the Wolves took back more money in this deal than they sent out (something you can't do when above the 1st apron).
- Dillingham + Miller = $8,797,797
- Dosunmu + Phillips = $9,740,195

The Wolves can also finalize the Ayo Dosunmu part of the trade by using the trade exception from the Nickeil Alexander-Walker trade, but you can't use trade exceptions from a prior season when above the 1st apron.

To get under the 1st apron, the Wolves traded away Mike Conley and they gave up a pick swap with Detroit in this summer's draft (with today's standings, that means the Wolves would drop from the 23rd pick to the 29th pick in June).

Now that the dust has settled, it’s clear that TC and his front office cohorts performed brilliantly in this phase. I was expecting something very unsettling but we ended up with something very exciting as I see it. Leading up to the Ayo trade we were a very good team but not quite good enough to win it all. The Ayo trade was a surgical maneuver that provides a pure net gain that will undoubtedly make us a better team. Are we good enough now? I’m not sure. We still have an intensity problem and I’m not sure Ayo solves that. We’ll see.
