I thought Ty Lawson at least had a chance to be really good.
I thought Rubio was way overhyped (I was right!) and I figured we could get our PG of the future later in the draft.
And we did draft him! Before trading him, of course.
His college stats his senior year were really good. He got a lot of assists and didn't turn the ball over much, got a lot of steals, and basically couldn't miss a shot that year. He had a good effective field goal percentage despite not shooting 3s at a high volume (by the standards of the coming decade). I remember making a big spreadsheet to compare prospects and his stats were just really high comparatively in a lot of categories. And he won the championship that year.
But he was about as tall as me. Soo . . . yeah. That was dumb.
I also wanted Demarcus Cousins coming out of college the next year, and I was right he ended up being good, but oh man am I glad we didn't draft him!

Shabazz for me. Ugh it still hurts. Ricky Davis was a longshot when we were desperate. Good ole McHale letting his boy Danny put him over a barrel.
Re: Players you thought would be great!
Ricky and Corey Brewer. I wanted the Wolves to draft them both badly. Maybe in a different iteration of the team things may have fared better.
As much as Wolves fans loved Ty Lawson and Al Thornton, they didn't have as good of a career as Ricky and Corey did, though

Yeah, Ricky Rubio is definitely on my list. To be fair, he was a really good NBA starting PG, but just didn't turn into the franchise player I thought he'd be.
The other HUGE miss of mine (along with good old Cam) was thinking James Wiseman would be the right pick over Ant and Ball. Thank God Rosas got that right!
Of course my most recent miss is Shannon, Jr., who I thought could play a major role this season to the point that we had to trade Randle to make way for him and Jaden. I still wonder if he's being mis-used (he needs the ball in his hands), but I'm running out of excuses for him. He has the size, experience, and athleticism to impact games without being a big scoring option like he was in college. Figure it out like NAW did!

Ty Lawson actually was a good PG for his first few seasons. It was a drinking problem that got to him as much as his lack of size, but he was very solid for a few years there before it all caught up to him.SameOldNudityDrew wrote: ↑Mon Mar 02, 2026 3:28 pm I thought Ty Lawson at least had a chance to be really good.

Re: Players you thought would be great!
I think TJ is a better player already, and he's my current bust (I thought he could be very good IDK about great though). I was never high on Bazz, the thing that drove me crazy the most was how he'd run over a guy going to the hoop for an offensive foul like every game. Everybody do the Bazz Bulldozer!
I thought AE would be great after seeing him his first year. Kind of easy I suppose.

That's fun info on Glass. I liked him back in the day when I was basically a kid. He did also have a couple injuries too. I was always saying a sing song little rhyme of "Gerald Glass fell on his ass!"FNG wrote: ↑Mon Mar 02, 2026 9:01 am Rider is a good choice. I have a couple obscure ones.
My first is Gerald Glass. In those days, you could watch Timberwolves' practices from the running track above the court at the downtown Northwest club, and I would sometimes take a lunch break and watch the practices. Glass was often the best player on the court...nobody could stop him. And then when he scored 30 or something off the bench against the Lakers (I think), I thought he was going to be a star. Nope.
Then I got excited when we signed Felipe Lopez as a free agent. A college teammate of mine from NYC watched many of his games in high school, and he would call me saying he had never seen a better basketball player...a true NY legend. He struggled in his first two years in the pros and was released. I thought he just had to find the right situation, and he would return to his high school glory days with the change in scenery. Nope again.
Re: Players you thought would be great!
I'm trying to remember a Wolves guy I absolutely believed in and he wasn't it and I'm sure there have been a couple from years past but I'm blocking them out. I was never all in on Will Avery but man he might have been one of the biggest disappointments because he basically had 2 good games and was out of the league in couple years despite lots of people praising the Wolves for getting him in that draft.
The guy I did more recently stake a claim thinking I he would be a worthwhile player was Wendel Moore Jr. I wasn't thinking he would be an all-star or anything but I thought he had a really good chance of being a high end rotation guy that's very valuable with a similar impact to Donte. I recognized there was a chance he wouldn't be able to put it together but I just liked a few traits he had going for him. At least there were a bunch of other guards in that draft that have also struggled to make any meaningful impact in the league.

If you can't count on a 5'11" white guy from Australia panning out in the 90s NBA... I'm not sure if there's anything I can believe in anymore.
I'll always remember you Shane Heal.
Sure, he only made less than 27% of his shots (less than 19% of his threes) while in Minnesota... but he just needed more time. So, he left the NBA for 6+ years. When he returned, he shot 29% (22% on threes) for the Spurs. IMPROVEMENT!
The Wolves were just a bit too early on the blonde sharpshooting Steve Kerr wannabe.
