Caleb Banks

Post by Wolvesfan21 »

Did a deep dive and aggregated my thoughts.

The positives. He's huge and a freak athlete. Quick as anyone for his size, I mean super quick. Great power as well. 6-6 and 330 with a 7-2 wingspan.

The bad. Injured foot 4 times and two surgeries. Not major surgeries though and he even played on the foot / competed in the combine with said broken foot. Still a big guy with a bad foot is a huge concern.

The other bad. His technique is poor. He simply doesn't know how to really play DT. He looks like a HS player and relied on his power and quickness to get by. Plays tall too much, not able the shed blocks often enough, plays with a questionable motor at times, etc.

Bottom line. He has potential to be a stud in the NFL. However the negatives are real. He is first going to have to be able to overcome these foot problems and second, learn much better technique and play with a more consistent motor. True boom or bust pick. Most said he'd be a 2nd rounder and question the draft spot.

I don't mind the pick, swinging for the fences. But we'll see.

Yeah it's a tough one. He could be a pro bowler, but odds say he sees the cold tub more then the field and he needs polishing too. However he has potential to be a top DT in the NFL. Big swing and probably a big miss. But then I'm OK with a gamble. I would have liked it better obviously if we traded down some and recouped say a 3rd rounder.

I saw a tweet from Pelissero from before the draft that he was likely going to be picked in the first round so I think the idea he was going to be there is unlikely. Meanwhile I saw some of what teams were getting to trade down a handful of spots it wasn't exactly inspiring.

Yesterday I was thinking are foot issues as big of a deal as they were like 5 years ago. It was that amount of time when an Achilles injury was potentially career threatening in a number of sports. It's still a big injury but now it's more like how long will it take for the guy to get back not whether or not he will be able to play again.

I saw a video of former DT Kevin Carter saying Banks might be even better in the NFL based on how things are now. He does seem like an excellent fit for Flores to move around. DT was a spot they could use some more talent and he has that it seems pretty clear.

Edit: Just to be clear I hardly watched college football and did almost no research before the draft. I had no real knowledge or investment in any particular prospects. I did feel like they did enough in FA that they weren't absolutely locked into drafting certain positions plus there are still guys out there they could sign or maybe even trade for if they need to plug a hole

I did read that Safety was fairly deep in this draft and DT less so. I basically read that in passing basically by accident so...who knows. Lol

I did minimal research on the draft overall, just spent a couple hours viewing Banks to get a good feel for what he looks like after we picked him. You might be right about him getting picked if we trade back too far.

His upside is tremendous, however it may be a long shot too. Some guys were even saying 3rd round because of his risk. But like I said, I don't mind the gamble. He could be a top end player if stars align, so to me a late first makes sense.

He was raw etc but his last full season he had 4.5 sacks as a DT? That seems pretty good to me. Sacks can be a misleading stat but just sayin.

Meanwhile they added a run stopper later in Orange. My friend who is a bears fan is a little jealous we got him and Golday. The highlights I watched of Golday he looks faster than that 40 time which actually isn't too shabby. I'll be interested to hear why they picked the Miami Safety.

I haven't looked into these new guys yet, I'll probably take a few days to run through highlights and reports. I kind of like building up our defensive trenches/front 7. Get a top defense and you don't need to be great on offense to have a shot. So possibilities are there these guys really pan out.
