Lynx talk

Post by FNG »

I know at least Kek will participate in this thread because he knows more about womens basketball in Minnesota than anyone here.

I haven't watched any games yet, and I know we lost some key pieces and Collier is still out for a while, but I'm intrigued by this squad. It's interesting that both of our local pro teams have been playing without a true point guard. But Olivia Miles changes the equation for the Lynx...I think we're really going to enjoy watching her develop.

Let's go Lynx!

One thing that has interested me is that Reeve seems resigned to Collier leaving after this season. That put a bit of a damper on my enthusiasm for the team. Who were the big losses you referenced FNG? I know we added Olivia Miles and she should be great.

I forgot that you know a lot about women's hoops too, Cool. They lost 6 rotation players through expansion and free agency, including a lot of size...one of my favorites Bridgit Carleton and Alana Smith for starters. I still think they will be fine.

I've always thought I should be following the Lynx they play the right way Reeve is a really good coach all the things. I became even more intrigued when they lost so many players. I was like how are they gonna do this again?

Collier only signed for a year. That doesn't sound good but to be fair it may make some sense. She is returning from injury and they Lynx did lose a lot in the offeason. What if they aren't very good this year? The other small possibility is what if Collier is like man if I give up a little money we can sign another legit fa next off-season. collier is one of the WNBA players that probably is in a position to do this. I'm not gonna worry too much about this although with my limited knowledge I'm a fan of her.

Now to the what's happening now. They went into the season not only losing all those players in the off-season Collier hurt and Dorka a likely starter or top player on the bench out for a while with an injury. What have they done? Well they asked for a European scout and they signed a bunch of players from over there. The most intriguing one was 21 year old Emma Chechova who after watching some clips I was like well she looks pretty good. She came over from her season in Europe and in preseason immediately looked like a player. She was doing good things off the bench before she had a non-contact ACL injury closing out of Paige B. It kinda sucked but it looks like they found another core player out of nowhere and probably another reason they took Miles instead of one of the bigs.

Meanwhile Olivia Miles looks pretty good. She is kinda everything Ricky Rubio was supposed to be. Flashy high level passes jetting to the rim she can shoot and it looks like she is at least putting in the effort on D which I think was the biggest question. She struggled some in the last game against the best defensive team but she looks like a good guard and a true PG which they haven't had since Lindsey Whalen.

I've just been watching the extended highlights this year but it seems like a fun group and it looks like Reeve may have done it again finding players that fit and playing up. Nia Coffey is the next vet that looks to be better than her last stops.

Anyway I'm definitely gonna keep up with them this season. They are 2-2 despite everything. That's pretty good.

Um, gotta admit I may have had a little crush there too, Cool. But she has no interest in us, for a few reasons!

I forgot about her...it's really crazy how much talent that left and they are kinda sorta doing just fine. I didn't even remember where she went so I looked it up and I guess she hasn't even played yet his year for the Sky.

Players they lost

Bridget Carleton: Starting SF to the expansion draft and got a max
Alanna Smith: Starting center and the DPOY last year to FA and got a max and is struggling in Dallas
Hiedaman: runner up for 6th man of the year to FA in Seattle
Jessica Shepherd: 7th man and backup PF/C to Dallas
Dijonai Carrington: 8th man, lost in FA to the Sky she is still hurt from last year
Masha: 9th man, backup center lost in the expansion draft and not playing in the WNBA this year.

The Lynx lost a lot.

Returners:
Courtney Williams: got the max for 2 years, moved back to her natural SG position. Elite mid range jump shooter. Maybe the most streakiest player in basketball history

Kayla McBride: long time vet. Moved to 6th all time in 3s made

Kosu: second round pick last year. One of the youngest players in the WNBA. The WNBA has weird rules in you can go pro if international in the year it turn 19 but USA players it’s 21. She is currently the 8th man. Good defender but just a cutter on offense was the last player on the team last year.

Injuries:
Phee: Top 3 player in the league. Like cool said she only signed a 1 year deal and made weird comments about her future. Expected out into the all star break from the non call last year, the play Cheryl freaked out about

Dorks Juhaz: was the 8th man 2 years ago but didn’t play in the WNBA last just. She is back after being named the youngest euro league mvp ever. However she hurt her foot in the playoffs overseas. Expected back soon and I’m expecting a massive jump.

Emma Chekova: signed her as a 4 year undrafted international rookie. She’s 21 and so freaking good. So much potential but she tore her ACL in the 3rd game of the year. The Lynx are the only team with an international scout and Cheryl found a real diamond in the rough here. Sucks she hurt.

New players:
Olivia Miles: #2 overall pick and she is freaking amazing. Good finisher, elite passer and is a complete floor general. Needs to get a more consistent jump shot but is the ROY favorite (NY has an older international rookie who has also been great)

Natasha Howard: Starting Center, older vet who came off the bench during the Lynx dynasty years. Elite as a roller in the PnR. Can be a little turnover prone, undersized and is missing FTs this year after being good her whole career.

Nia Coffee: currently the starting PF. She is from Hopkins and Amir’s sister. This is am example of Cheryl doing her magic. Last year she had 3 games of 11+ points this year she already has 2 and playing elite defense.

The rest of the bench: our bench is really bad at the moment. Caldwell, Delare and hamzova have brought almost nothing in their minutes (Caldwell has been ok) and Hoff is playing due to Chekova injury and she is so so bad as a 28 year old rookie.

Overall the Lynx need to keep around 500 until Dorka and Phee are back and then who knows. They are so well coached. Cheryl will put average players into positions to succeed and she is the greatest coach of all time. Highly recommend watching the Lynx because Olivia miles plays such a controlled fun brand of basketball.
