I just want to say a couple of things, I mostly agree that making that big of a decision shouldn’t happen before you are 18, due to your brain not being fully developed (brain not fully developed at 18 either but you are a legal adult). But when you are 18, you are an adult, it’s your life do want to do with it doesn’t “hurt” anyone else.
In my experience making a transition is almost never pushed by the parents. I would mostly say in my experience the kid is usually isolated and made to feel less than others. The brain is a unique, scary, and awesome thing. Usually a lot of it comes from trauma and a lack of community and belonging. Everyone wants to feel wanted. Mean shit we are all on this message board for some type of community that’s why we haven’t left in 15+ years.
And I think that is what Cheryl is saying. I don’t think she is saying let’s have all these kids change sex. But sports is awesome, sports is probably the biggest community team building thing you will ever get in life. Let’s not isolate kids that are different than us, let’s teach them skills on building friendships, working together, being physically healthy. Let’s not isolate the kids that say “why am I the way I am” even more that leads to more depression, isolation and more mental health symptoms/disorders.
Sports is a connector and a separator in my opinion. And like Cheryl mentioned at her presser on Saturday at practice, things change when scholarships are involved and competing at the highest level. Like on the Minnesota professional women’s soccer team there is a born female who transitioned to a male who is their starting goalie.
There is nuance to every situation, discussion is important, also Tim tell me to STFU if you want me to stop because I will because this is not fully about basketball. And I like talking hoops with you all in this silly little community we have built from so facets of life
My theory is that there was a lot of gender dysphoria back in your generation and my generation also (I’m in my mid 30s) but it was hidden a lot more because it was massively frowned upon “back in the day”. Very similar to being gay, there wasn’t less gay people it was just hidden more because it was not socially acceptable.
I also want to say social media has changed everything. I work with a lot of lower income households and a lot of kids. Kids are so fucking mean. You are given a screen so early in life because it’s easier for the parents, and it’s socially acceptable. You are one click away from porn that watching at a young age is so detrimental to your brain chemistry, so many interactive games like Roblox or Fortnite when you are playing a game with a potential 45 year old man being a predator online with your 10 year old kid. Having Snapchat in locker rooms, Instagram where you are comparing yourself consistently to your peers and others for unrealistic body issues. Kids playing video games for 10 hours a day because it’s easier to let your kid do that then parent, get creates such a lack of social skills. Kids have such a different life now than what we had. In my work experience leads to so much anxiety and depression.
And then just in general, population has increased and we are more inclusive in general than in the past for random demographic issues so you just see it more because you have access to Social media where everyone has an opinion on something
