So now that we know how the Wolves are able to sign Kuminga I'll give a final grade on this move. It has to be at least a B of not an A and that's even factoring my original skeptism that's melting a little due to some more data points. I'll break it down further.
Lets say this goes wrong or how I look at the Kuminga deal financially. The Wolves are paying him around 6 million this year. They also had to trade away Josh Green and got Konchar back who they waived and stretched. So even if you considered that waived and stretch money and Kuminga not being good and opting into his deal next year that's still less than a 20 million dollar gamble and if he opts in he is probably still at least worth a roster spot saving the team from having to sign a vet min guy so that reduces the cost another 2 million. So basically if the Wolves had the ability earlier in FA to sign Kuminga for say around 15 million for just 1 year would I have been interested? Sure
What adds to the deal and helps with moving off of a useful rotation level player in Green is that now the Wolves can sign a 15th player who my guess is going to be a vet player likely a vet that can play if needed and will over some vet leadership. That's something that was needed. Plus now the Wolves have a young somewhat interesting prospect in Cody Williams. Again they got younger in this deal but will be able to add a possible useful player to the oster in addition to adding Kuminga. Idk if this off-season will work out but if you weren't in on the Wolves as they were constructed at the end of the season...Connelly has very much reshaped this roster in a bunch of ways and the youth movement is almost hilarious.
