The Minnesota Timberwolves are trading Josh Green and cash to the Utah Jazz for Cody Williams and John Konchar, sources tell ESPN.

They found a home for Josh Green on a Jazz team that wanted an additional 3-and-D wing; moving his $14.7 million deal gives Minnesota the salary space to sign Jonathan Kuminga using the taxpayer midlevel exception.

This leaves the Wolves with 14 roster spots filled and about $4.5M under the 2nd apron. That’s impressive. If the Wolves want to add a 15th person to the roster at some point, they have the room to sign a vet minimum player and still still leave themselves a couple million under the 2nd apron. I don’t have any opinion of Cody Williams. I haven’t noticed him and never had him on my draft radar back in 2024. His 3-point shooting is terrible, but his overall stats aren’t bad. He must have some talent. He was the 10th pick in the 2024 draft and is still only 21 years old. Importantly, the Wolves have a team option on him after next season so they’re not committed to him for more than one season. They’ll carry Konchar dead money at $2M per year for three seasons. That’s significantly better than the $5M per year the team would have carried if they had simply waived and stretched Green.

So yes, this front office seems to know what they’re doing.

I also knew nothing about Cody until this morning, but now I'm intrigued. First, his pedigree is good, being the brother of JDub. Second, he was a consensus 5-star recruit out of high school and the 10th pick in the draft just 2 years ago. Finally, Monster was correct about him finishing strong last season. Look at his game log...he averaged over 15 PPG the final 2 months of the season after he was moved into the starting lineup (of course, because of Utah's tanking strategy!). As Lip said, he's not a 3-point shooter. But he might have the potential to become one, as he made 17 of his 41 treys in college (41.5%). And he's another young player who loves to run the court...fits in well with what Finchy wants to do.

The Wolves are deep enough that Cody doesn't have to crack the rotation. But he has the potential to fill perhaps the only need the Wolves had...a backup to Jaden at the 3. I think TC has done it again: fixed his financial situation while also bringing in a player with some upside. Of course wildwolf might be correct, and Cody might just be trash...after all, he was chosen in the draft by Dumb Danny Ainge, who might be the least successful POBO in the Association the past 5 years. But I still like the move. I never saw Green as any more than a throw in in the Ball trade, and to replace him with a much cheaper, 21-year-old former lottery pick and 5-star recruit sounds like grand theft larceny of Utah...again!

Josh Green is a good player the Wolves got worse in this trade but it was a financial trade to be able to add Kuminga to the roster. The Wolves sorta did what we all expected to do at sole point which was trade him for a PF.

I do like your point and was thinking the same last night that Williams is a more lengthy guy that could play as a bigger wing if needed. I think of him sort of the same way I did about Julian Phillips last year. Phillips arguably had proven to be more useful but Williams is younger. Williams has at least played a number of NBA games and minutes even if it was for a terrible Jazz team. I would not be surprised if he played some games in Iowa. He will have to really show something for them to pick up that option for next year. Lets say the Wolves have some interest in keeping him beyond this season even if they don't do that team option they have some routes to do so. He would be 2-way eligible. They will have his bird rights so they could pay him something over the vet min. They could also do an extension...which seems pretty unlikely. Ultimately it's a flyer on a young player to see what he might have while making some finances work. If he really sucks at some point they could even move on from him this season and sign someone because I believe they have the finical flexibility to do that.

Cody has shown zero potential as a shooter so far in the NBA. I mean, Clark is leaps and bounds ahead of him and he's shaky at best! He also struggled to shoot in the G-League and made less than 70% of his FTAs down there. So while I realize we are in peak optimism season, there is zero indication that Cody is going to be enough of a threat from the outside to play on a team that already will have at least three weak/non-shooters in the rotation in Rudy, Kuminga, and Joan.

I agree, monster, that in terms of rotation readiness right now, the Wolves got worse...Josh Green could have filled in at SG if Ayo, Ant or TJ got hurt. But unlike some here, Green was not in my 9-man (or even 10) rotation...just like Williams isn't. So if a player is not in the rotation plans, I look more at potential. And I'll take a 21-year-old former lottery pick who averaged over 15 PPG the last two months of last season for $6 million over a solid 25 year old reserve making $14.6 million. I get that we are now worse at 3-point shooting...Green has been steady throughout his career. But if Williams ever turns into anything close to what he was coming out of high school just 3 years ago, we may have discovered Jaden's backup at SF. And you're right...let's see what he can do in steady minutes in Iowa. He may turn out to be trash, but I'm intrigued about his potential upside. And meanwhile let's see how Green fits in with hapless Utah...they are loaded at wing with Lauri, Peterson, Sensabaugh, Bailey and even old friend Okogie. Green may find fewer minutes than he had at Charlotte.
