Will start by saying i am not a Kuminga fan. But maybe he can change my mind with THIS team. This season. Some say the best thing is if he can play himself into a 20+ million or so, aav contract after this season. Which in theory would make us win alot more games than last two seasons. Then we would shake his hand bye in the offseason. As-if we have no way to retain him. I disagree. Rudy declines his option. And takes another 7-10 million pay cut and does another 2 +1 deal like his last deal. Then you sign n trade Donte or trade Ayo. That is the cap space path to retain Kuminga at a higher aav

Ball
Ant
Jaden
Kuminga
Gobert

Beringer
Ayo or Donte
Clark
Shannon Jr.
Evans

We would still basically have the same roster next season. Minimum 7 deep again. Depending on how players shake out with this seasons performances.

There’s really no seriously plausible path to re-signing Kuminga for next year if he has a breakout season. A breakout season for Kuminga would likely mean a starting salary next season of at least $20M. Since the Wolves won’t have Bird rights to Kuminga, they’d have to move from $50M over the salary cap where they are now to at least $20M under the cap. There’s no plausible way to accomplish that $70M swing. Yes, the cap will likely go up a bit, but most or all of that cap increase will be absorbed by the salary increases of the Wolves players under contract. Even if the Wolves traded Rudy for no incoming salaries and let Donte walk for nothing, that would only shed $49M.

I suppose there’s a chance they could get below the luxury tax threshold and re-sign Kuminga at the non-taxpayer MLE by entering into a new reduced/stretched contract with Rudy and letting Donte walk. But if Kuminga has a breakout season, his market value will certainly be higher than a contract starting at $16M. On the other hand, if he really loves it here and develops a sense of loyalty, it’s possible it stays on a 3-year MLE deal.

I think it'll be close, I can see him playing a bit better then his previous years, but still have doubts teams will line up to pay him 20+. It does really hinge on how well he plays. If he's good to great, yeah he's probably gone. But oh well. It would have hopefully been worth it (our 1 year rental that is).

Unless he has injury issues, he is going to have a hard time not being good considering his supporting cast here.

Hopefully, he is satisfied with his fit here enough to sign a 3-year deal starting at the MLE with a player option on the 3rd year when the Wolves would have his full Bird Rights.

But, first things first...

It also depends on what a "breakout" season looks like for him. Is it setting career highs in volume stats like points, rebounds, and assists, shooting the 3 well, and closing out games? Or is it simply being a positive-contributing cog on a winning team with others doing most of the heavy lifting and him sitting on the bench in crunch-time in favor of Ayo (e.g.)?

I think the former pays a lot more than the latter, but the Wolves mostly need him to be a positively-contributing cog (defend, run the floor, don't do stupid things, etc.), even if the box score looks rather pedestrian at times.

Another question I'm gonna ask...how much does he actually care about the money? How many good teams will have the ability to pay him a lot more than the Wolves? Like Jon K said in his last podcast if he prices himself way out of the Wolves ability to pay him that means he will have been a good player for them. I'll add that it will make the Wolves look like a place where someone can go to revitalize their career.

He has to be a role player here, he's not here to score 20+ a game and have the ball in his hands. We got Ball and Ant, you're not seeing the ball that much but you will get open 3P looks and easy matchups on offense. So when he does get ops, they'll be the best he'll ever see.
