Re: Twins Draft Thread 2017
Good call on Royce Lewis, jester. I gotta admit I'm not happy with it, but maybe he will grow on me. But jeez, a .388 BA in high school? I don't mean to toot my own horn, but my BA was higher than that in high school (okay, maybe the pitching I faced wasn't as good)! My biggest problem with this pick is it might signal they aren't all that happy with Nick Gordon. I would have definitely preferred McKay or Greene.
And sure enough, the Reds don't waste any time in picking Greene...I'm worried this one might come back to haunt us down the road. The dude throws 102 effortlessly...
Edit: The MLB network analysts are saying Lewis might end up in CF...I know Buxton still struggles at the plate, but I didn't see CF as a big need down the road.
Jester, sell me on this pick! Is it just a money thing...leaving enough for the next two picks?

I'm no baseball genius mind but it doesn't seem like you draft #1 overall position players out of HS based on your current roster. They are likely years away from making the majors. I've read the conventional wisdom is that HS position players are less likely to bust than HS pitchers. I don't know if that is true or not.

This Kid will probably end up at 2nd base and should become a very good hitter if he keeps developing. He's clocked at a 6.68 60 yard dash if you want to know how fast that is compared to other guys Buxton runs a 6.57. So the guy is pretty damn fast. I don't think this pick has anything to do with Nick Gordon at all I think they just took what they thought was the BPA for any position player. I think your looking at Brian Dozier replacement in 3 years.
I know you worried about Hunter Greene Lst but I'm going to be bold and say this kid never makes it to the majors as a starting pitcher but probably as a reliever. His fastball which is fast is straight as an arrow and he has no breaking stuff and I mean no breaking stuff I would say my curve ball is just as good as his I just throw 82 and not 98.
McKay I think is just a very good player but he's not projected to put up power numbers, do your really want a Joe Mauer/James Loney type at first base for another 10 years.
Even though I like Kyle Wright I think he's at max a #2 pitcher and I've heard reports that people are worried about the health of his elbow so I can understand why the twins didn't go with a guy who might have a bad medical.
Also now they have the money to take a couple of guys at 35 and 37 which they wouldn't been able to sign before, look at is we're getting 3 first round picks. The Astros did this in 2012 with Correa and the person they got with compensatory pick Lance McCullers Jr. Pretty good hall for them. Also the twins did this as well in 2012 and ended up with Buxton and Berrios.

Re: Twins Draft Thread 2017
Thanks, monster and jester...I'm feeling better about the pick. I knew the kid was fast, but he also is bigger than I thought and supposedly a great athlete. I don't love the sub .400 HS batting average, but I agree HS position players generally are lower risk than pitchers.
Meanwhile, two guys Monster has championed this year (Grossman and Mauer) are doing it again...nice to see the team bounce back with the tying runs after Mejia gives up 2 in the top of the first. This is another big series, and I'd love to see them win the first one.

How many games is Lewis batting average based on?

I can't find detailed stats, just summaries. I like the 4 homers and 25 SBs though...nice combination of power and speed.

Brent Rooker out of Mississippi state was picked at 35 and I love the pick. This guy is flat out masher, he probably won't stick in the outfield but probably end up at first base. The knock on him is that's he's older but this guy reminds me of young Morneau just needs to learn some plate discipline, but I think he can be just as good as McKay at the plate.
Btw this guy was my recommendation to the Texas rangers at 26

Great information, jester! I loved this pick when we drafted him last year (and he turned us down), and I like it even better this year. I think he had more than 20 homers this year! Should start at high A ball and move up quick, don't you think?

Definitely High A ball, if he consistently hits he will fast tracked up the minors I could see this guy being Mauer replacement.

I found the answer...
"Last season at JSerra, he hit .388 with 12 home runs and 25 stolen bases in 80 at-bats."
https://www.google.com/amp/www.latimes.com/sports/mlb/la-sp-mlb-draft-20170612-story,amp.html
That's like...um...some pretty good production for 80 ABs right?
