Good grief he is in his 2nd season of high league baseball and isn't and all star yet and yeah he is struggling at the plate but man that's not a lot of time to have figured it out. If people are seriously making a significant judgement based on that small amount of paying time well that's their problem. This is baseball guys can take time to get it figured out. 22 is still pretty young in baseball terms especially since the guy has played so little at the upper levels. This drives me crazy I realize there is reason for concern but chill out a bit here. I could probably find some player that sucked for his first 300 or so ABs before becoming a worthwhile hitter...oh wait that's sounds like Brian Dozier who is back to doing just fine at the plate thank you very much.
As for whether he should be playing in AAA or the majors that's fair question but at this point like LST said unless his confidence is getting crushed he may as well be up here playing defense and seeing what real pitching he has to adjust to instead of the lower level stuff at AAA.
It's fair to point out Buxton's age and promise. And Dozier's struggles. But we do have to acknowledge that he's been ridiculously bad at the plate thus far, without significant improvement along the way:
I'm fine with acknowledging the struggles. I'll point out that Buxton also has more extra base hits (28) than Dozier (18) during basically the same amount of ABs. 28 extra base hits ain't bad for a guy that struggling as bad as Buxton is with major league hitting so far in his career.
Fair enough. But that line still screams incompetence to an alarming degree at the major league level.
That being said, his age and defense have offset that just enough to keep him in the majors. Let's hope the injury is minor and he can gain some quality at bats the rest of the season and make very real improvements in 2017.
I would add that as bad as Byron's stats are, the visuals are even worse. Monster, I don't know if you're watching many games, but I don't know if I have ever seen a Twins' player look so lost at the plate. His at bats are painful to watch.
Monster, I'm not surprised that there are some impatient fans on Twitter, but I will tell you that at the ball park the fans are really in Byron's corner. Even though he is hitting worse than his closest comparison, Nishioki, the fans were on the Japanese infielder by this time in his career. Byron brings such excitement to the game, he makes the fans really cheer for him. I'm worried because he has looked so awful at the plate, but I'm with you guys in hoping this latest injury is minor and that he can quickly get back to trying to figure out major league pitching.
Sometimes it's good to not have the visuals to give a different perspective. I haven't watched the games a whole lot. I know guys make these big jumps and not look as lost and Buxton has but it's still a big jump. It's great it's sounds like he will be fine staying healthy is the biggest hurdle for him.

Abe sense your good at finding numbers unlike me, if you could I like to see his comparison with Carlos Gomez cause to me he has a lot of the same problems that Go Go had. Bad pitch selection, long lumping swing etc...

Pretty good comparison, jester, and since I'm up before Abe, I'll provide his first year numbers:
So, closer to Doz than Byron. It's telling that Gomez who we thought of as such a prolific strikeout guy struck out about half as frequently as Byron does.

Wow the strike out rate surprises me, I just remember going to the park with my Dad all the time and he would tell if Gomez could figure it out he would be scary good. Now I find myself doing the same thing with Buxton, hopefully he figures it out with us.
AbeVigodaLive wrote:Gomez had a couple of nice seasons in Milwaukee... he never really got there, did he? Consider he's only 30 this season, but here are his stats:
282 AB / 5 HR / 29 RBI / .216 BA / .280 OBP / .610 OPS / 95 Ks
Yikes.
Well it's more like he arrived, hung out at the party for a while then left or something.
New season, but even a worse result at the plate. He is now hitting .069 with an OPS of .203...I'm not going to look it up, but I'm fairly comfortable that is the lowest OPS in the league by a large margin. Making things even worse, he has struck out 17 times in 29 at bats!
I recognize we need to be patient with young players, but this is his third season and he is worse than ever. How long can they keep him up in the big leagues, much less keep him in the starting lineup?

So he's not the #1 prospect in baseball... after a .210 BA and 180+ strikeouts in 480 ABs?
