We got him, Ngakoue

Post by Wolvesfan21 »

Vikes trade a 2nd and 5th to the Jags for the star edge rusher.

I love it!

I was floored when I saw this. Just need to hope Hunter's tweak isn't more than they are letting on. Also I'd be down to let Cook and Harris leave if it means keeping Ngakoue and having one of if not the best outside pass rush in the league for years to come.

Despite all the heartbreak over the years, the Vikes have done a good job keeping themselves relevant and "in the mix" over the years. They usually field a good team and try to make bold moves. This one is pretty impressive.

The best way to help out an inexperienced secondary is by getting to the qb. Nice move.

It's an interesting move. I'm not against it but I'm not sure how good this guy actually is. If we are talking a top 10-15 DE that turned 25 a few months ago then cool. Meanwhile the Vikings gave up a reasonable amount in terms of draft picks to get this guy but they are also paying him 17.7 million one way or another for his services this year and then at some point will have to pay him Long term too. Like I said I don't have a good sense about how good he is. Some stuff I read this morning made him sound like he is good but maybe not big time payday good. Clearly the Vikings like him and I feel pretty good about their assessment of DL guys. I don't think they only got this guy because of this but it may say more about the DE they have other than Hunter than anything else. Maybe they just don't think they are ready. Maybe they think they can legit make a run at a Super Bowl this year and a DE like this is a pretty big piece to get. I wouldn't rule out the possibility if they think they have young guys ready to replace him that if they don't want to pay him they let him walk and get a 3rd round comp pick. If he is very productive for a year it may still be worth the draft capital difference if that were to happen. Of course if they were going to just keep him for a year they could have signed griffin for a year and it would have been cheaper and cost them no draft picks. So yeah I think the Vikings really like this guy and the league probably does too as a 2nd round and 5th round is a pretty decent price for a young probably At least good starter.

Edit: He took a pay cut down to 12 million to come to the Vikings. According to ESPN he turned down An extension Last year that would have paid him 19 million A year. Dude REALLY wanted out from the jags.

He had 12 sacks 3 years ago with 8 and 8 the last two. Just entering his prime, I could see him getting 12+ again in our defense. The only problem is, can the secondary cover long enough to let the DLIne have time to get there. Because really, you need both to succeed. Not just one or the other.

Saw this on a message board so take it with a grain of salt but: "Fun fact: There are three Edge players in NFL history drafted in the 3rd round or later who posted at least 6 sacks in their age 21 rookie season. Minnesota now has two of them. There are only two players drafted outside the first round in league history to tally at least 12 sacks in an age 22 or younger season. Both of them will be wearing Vikings purple this season."

We got a draft haul for Diggs so I'm not worried about losing picks especially when we'd likely get a 3rd back if he leaves. You can't really go wrong building around pass rush even if it costs us some other players to pay him next summer. With 3 young corners on rookie deals this is really the time to invest in the D-Line to help them out by getting to the QB early. There's not much better of an early career environment for a corner than Smith/Harris covering your back, Kendricks/Barr manning the middle of the field and Hunter/Ngakoue putting pressure on the QB.

Odenigbo is now a depth guy and also can be a pass rusher on the inside on passing downs which was where he was effective last year if I remember correctly. Also in terms of salary they sorta replaced Pierce with Ngakoue and going forward Pierce's contract will toll so if he is an effective DT that contract is likely to be a value one going forward which helps the cap situation.

Excited at first and it will be interesting how he fits on the field.

Few concerns
1. He is small and will be able to hold up well against the run. (PFF rates him under 60 against the run each season)
2. He has not led his team in sacks since 2016. (second-best pass rusher type)
3. He needs to get paid
4. How will he getting paid affect Hunter and other teammates?
5. How will we fix DT and IOL in moving forward?

Other news: Jaguars release former first-round pick Leonard Fournette less than two weeks before opener

Listening to PA. He brought up the run defense concerns. Talking that they might cut Rieff.
