Yeah Akers for sure. Chandler is probably not trusted enough in pass pro yet, so it's hard for them to get him on the field. I do want to see Chandler play more though. He has burst and top end speed. Mattison is meh. I never understood paying him, it felt like they bid against themselves. He's even been worse then I expected though and I thought he would be bad. lol60WinTim wrote: ↑Wed Nov 01, 2023 9:27 amI won't be surprised if our QBs rush for more yards than our RBs by the end of the season...Wolvesfan21 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 01, 2023 9:19 amDobbs and Hall might actually play pretty well. The line has been really good pass protecting and especially when JJ gets healthy this team is probably top 3 arguably first in the league as far as offensive weapons go (RB is very poor sure so I can see top 3).
The Vikes will likely need to pass quicker, which means more receptions for the RBs. With Mattison's hands, I wonder if this means more opportunities for Akers and/or Chandler?

I think the most disappointing part of Mattison this year is how poorly he has done out of the backfield. Previously he was at least solid there. Cook was the guy that would somewhat often drop balls that were easily catchable. Also I don’t get complaining about Mattison’s salary. They are paying him a little over 3 million a year. He has been disappointing this year no doubt (even accounting for the poor blocking) but they aren’t paying a whole lot. He basically got what other top backups get as either possible starters on another team or if a team ponies up a little extra to keep their guy as a top backup. It looks like they made the right decision on moving on from Cook. I wonder if Mattison was a guy that would have benefitted from playing more in preseason. Not everyone does well just jumping right into the season without more typical game play. It felt like that hurt the Vikings a little this year starting out the season.Wolvesfan21 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 01, 2023 9:36 amYeah Akers for sure. I think the Vikings will design some plays for either Hall or Dobbs to run. It just makes too much sense. If they have been willing to let Cousins do all those sneaks they should be using those guys athletic abilities. Both guys will also get some yards scrambling. That’s something defenses will have to account for or be willing to give up. Dobbs doesn’t look like a big guy but if he is going I’ve seen plays where he powers through tackles.
I’m not getting my hopes up on Hall but I think the Vikings like him. If they didn’t they wouldn’t have just brought back good old Sean Mannion to the PS they would have signed someone a little better.
Dobbs could be auditioning in for a future role on the Vikings. Mulle ns has no guaranteed money for next season. I actually like Mullens but Dobbs does give another element if he ends up playing. Dobbs signed for pretty cheap this last offseason and he could earn some sort of raise but if he does that means he probably had some success for the Vikings. Of course it’s possible he never even plays this season if Hall does well. Trading for Dobbs seems like a solid move since they didn’t give up much.
I was supposed they traded Cleveland for just a 6th round pick. I figured since they still seem to be trying to win games they would want him around at least for depth. It would be interesting to know what all went into that decision not that I’m against it. I think moving him they do save a some money plus it opened a roster spot as well.
Re: Will the Vikings ever draft and develop a quarterback?
Well, Hall looked pretty sharp on a lot of his 2nd drive throws. Hopefully he does not have a concussion, otherwise, we'll see Dobbs a lot sooner than we thought!
Re: Will the Vikings ever draft and develop a quarterback?
That was a whacky game. Honestly all things considered it was quite the win for the Vikings to get. Dobbs kept redeeming himself and ended up making enough plays to help win the game.

Was Mattison even solid? I always thought he was a backup type. I won't be surprised if our QBs rush for more yards than our RBs by the end of the season...

I expect the Vikes to at least draft a QB in the top 3 rounds. Find whatever guy you like and take a shot. PLUS they should draft one every year till they find a guy who shows tremendous promise. You don't need to be great the first year but at least show flashes and improvement. Like they should have booted Ponder sooner. He never looked the part. Admit when you whiff and take another swing.
I don't even mind going with Dobbs, Hall, Rookie next year. Let them fight it out at camp and during the season if need be. Especially now that we are going to have to sink a ton of money into JJ and Darrisaw. The salary cap won't allow them to spend 40 million on a QB very soon. Kirk even has 27 million deferred into next year. Ugh.
Re: Will the Vikings ever draft and develop a quarterback?
I should keep talking crap about Mattison he ended up making 2 catches out of the backfield in the last game. Yes he was always at least solid. Even if he wasn’t they aren’t paying him some sort of significant money. If they were paying him like 5 million sure but if you are unhappy paying Mattison I’m not sure how you even sleep at night knowing how much they are paying CJ Ham. Lol Regardless I do think Akers looked like the better player or a better player for what this team needs. Hopefully Chandler is ready to step up or whoever else they can grab. The past few months has illustrated even more to my why I wouldn’t pay a RB big money even if they are a really good player…unless you simply have the cap space to spend on that guy for a few years because you have cheap players at other positions including QB so you can afford it.Wolvesfan21 wrote: ↑Mon Nov 06, 2023 4:15 pmWas Mattison even solid? I don’t think drafting a QB every single year is a good idea. Why? Because in the end you may end up dumping a worthwhile guy because you drafted some other guy that ends up being worthless. There are only so many roster spots. Draft a guy see what he has for a year or two (ok maybe year 1 it seems clear he isn’t any good and you move on) plus look at under after players. You don’t even have to absolutely kill it either but getting a top fringe starter backup can be valuable too. Taylor Heinicke isn’t the answer to any team but I’d love to have him as a backup because he can actually win you a game. Dobbs might be that kind of guy.
There are more ways of saving cap money than at the QB spot. Lots of positions can cost quite a bit of money. If you can finding starting level player…really anywhere in the draft or otherwise like UDFA great. Sometimes it makes sense to use a draft pick to possibly get a cheap player at another position than take another swing at a QB. Imagine if you found the next pass rusher in the mid rounds like the Vikings used to be good at instead of taking a flyer at QB. That type of player makes a ton of money.
Ultimately I think there is a reason why the Vikings didn’t sign Cousins long term last offseason even though it sounded like Kirk was willing to take a bit of a discount (less than the 40 million number you mentioned). They wanted to wait and see what else they could do. Maybe Hall is the guy or a good enough guy. Maybe Dobbs can help bridge the gap. Maybe they draft another guy they feel really good about. I also think they really like Kirk but as everyone knows it’s going to be tough to afford him especially if they looks to keep a guy like Hunter past this season. We have a chunk of games to see what the current healthy QBs on the roster can and can’t do. Game 1 was pretty wild. The Vikings are NEVER boring.

Re: Will the Vikings ever draft and develop a quarterback?
The reason I bring in one every year and I'm not saying they "all need to be first rounders" is that you should take more swings and eventually find a guy who shows something (more chances to hit!!!). Sure I suppose you could have a guy stink or not even get a shot then turn it around years later. Maybe like a Brett Favre who the Falcons let go. Drew Brees I suppose is another but he had shoulder issues and he was already really good. Pretty much most star QB's show something promise right away so you know when to stop drafting them every year. I'm saying take a swing each year till you find a guy who projects into a top 5 or 10 QB. It's nearly impossible to win a SB with a non superstar QB.Monster wrote: ↑Tue Nov 07, 2023 7:25 amI should keep talking crap about Mattison he ended up making 2 catches out of the backfield in the last game. Trent Dilfer Brad Johnson Nick Foles Eli Manning and Joe Flacco are all guys that are not superstar QBs that won a Super Bowl in the past 20 years. Yeah I know. Your odds go way down. How many superstar QB's win compared to randos (figure superstar QB's are top 10 but for sure top 5)? The point is to get the best odds to win the superbowl. The betting odds have the Chiefs and Eagles at about 20%. Both have great QB's (top 10 and number one). Meanwhile the Vikings are at 1% 100/1. Count in some juice for the books and they are under 1 percent.Monster wrote: ↑Wed Nov 08, 2023 5:44 amTrent Dilfer Brad Johnson Nick Foles Eli Manning and Joe Flacco are all guys that are not superstar QBs that won a Super Bowl in the past 20 years. It's nearly impossible to win a SB with a non superstar QB.
I want a 20% chance not 1%.
The reality is is that there are 2 things a franchise can do in terms of finding that guy at QB.
1. Have an actual eye for talent. This is something the Vikings haven’t had in terms of selecting a QB for many years. It doesn’t have to be the GM or even the head coach but usually it’s one of those people.
2. Able to develop those players. Sure some guys probably would have been HOF regardless but who do you feel like is more likely to develop a QB the team that has Andy Reid coaching or any head coach after Denny Green up to the current staff?
It’s not just about taking a bunch of shots at QB. You need to know what you are looking for, have people to develop those players. While I believe NFL is a ton about systems for players and so I get that teams draft based on systems they have in place…how many teams passed on Lamar Jackson because they didn’t want to change what they were doing already? Maybe it was only a couple but I’m still puzzled how he dropped that far. Meanwhile during the Denny Green era the Vikings had a number of good or worthwhile QBs brought to their roster.
I’ll go a little deeper in the weeds on NFL QBs. It occurred to me one reason why the position has less than 30 good starters is…there is nowhere for QBs to develop except in college and practices. You aren’t sending your top development backup to play in some offseason league to get them experience. It’s the fringe guys that are just hoping to get a shot that are playing in those leagues. QB is so much more complex than say a RB. RB is more than just knowing a play seeing a hole and running fast through it or making a cut etc but still. QB is the guy every plays goes through. I think the NFL would have a better product if they found more ways to help teams develop QBs. Maybe every team should get some sort of developmental QB spot on their roster. The NBA keeps having more and more talent infused into the league. Of course a significant piece of that is the worldwide growth of the spot. Another huge piece is the the g-league being a true developmental league plus so many other international leagues players can play in. The new rule the NFL implemented this year after the 49ers didn’t have a healthy QB in a playoff game rewards teams to some extent for having another QB on the roster. The other issue with teams developing QBs is that most teams want to have a vet backup. They don’t want to go into their offseason program praying that their rookie is going to be good enough if they have to play. Plenty of vet backups are worthy of their position especially depending on the roster makeup and the system fit. Vet backups take away opportunities away from younger guys development which makes sense but also it reduces practice reps etc etc. I think the NFL needs to figure out how to develop more QBs.
