Dlo on the JJ Reddick Podcast
Re: Dlo on the JJ Reddick Podcast
Just for fun compare Jamal Murray's stats to Russell then consider their relative situations during their careers. Just something to consider. Also...remember the people that were against drafting Murray were concerned about his physical attributes and defense. Who would want that guy right now?

I was thinking of that same comparison earlier today and was going to post something about it. They're both very similar - scoring PGs who aren't particularly quick or athletic but who are highly skilled and very smart. Russell actually has better size and is a better passer while Murray seems to be a bit more athletic. But Russell hasn't had the well-suited and stable situation that Murray was drafted into.
While Murray's success tells us what Russell can be, I'd say that the success of the Nuggets tells us something about what the Wolves can be. Like the Wolves, the Nuggets are built around a core due that consists of an elite but defensively challenged center and an elite but defensively challenged scoring PG. The parallel is striking. Denver's success suggests that, with the right head coach and the right complementary players around KAT and Russell, the Wolves can become a contending playoff team.

Denver is deep with talent and has been for a while now. Consider a couple draft trades and picks.
In 2014 they traded the rights to McDermott and drafted Nurkic and Gary Harris both who are better individually. Of course I think they kinda screwed up when trading Nurkic giving up a draft pick while adding Plumblee.
They drafted Mudiay at 7 and he was basically a bust.
Utah core 2 players were drafted using Denver draft picks that Utah traded with Denver to get. Let that sink in for a minute.
So the reality is as good as Denver has been building a really good franchise they haven't nailed every pick and every move. They actually screwed up a number of times and still did will because they made good picks (and developed guys)especially in the 2nd round with Jokic and Morris (still don't get how he dropped that far honestly). So even if Culver sucks it doesn't mean Rosas and the Wolves are no good and are kinda screwed. There are plenty of opportunities to build out the roster and it's worth saying again they didn't even get a full season of games in plus all the moves they made in season.

Denver's success is obviously driven by their two core stars, Murray and Jokic. Then of course, they've surrounded those two with solid rotation players. As you pointed out, Denver's front office has made some mistakes. As you also pointed out, they've made some stellar draft picks, including Murray, Jokic, Harris and more recently Porter Jr. I've said repeatedly, that top NBA front offices don't hit on every move they make. In fact, the best front offices make a number of mistakes. Unfortunately, when you look at the track record of Wolves front offices over the years, you see almost all blunders.
As for Rosas, it's too early to judge. The Culver pick might turn out to be only one blunder among a lot of successful moves. And importantly, I'm not ready to declare the Culver pick a blunder. It looks that way right now, especially given how well Herro has performed. But I still see some Brandon Roy in Culver's game and it's too early to proclaim him a failure. I was impressed by the undrafted free agents Rosas signed and I still like the Nowell pick in the second round last year. Rosas has his core two now in KAT and Russell. It's fair to disagree as to whether that's a core duo you can build a contender around. But Rosas clearly believes in those two. What's important is that Rosas has three terrific draft assets this year to work with to augment the team's talent. This draft will definitely put the Wolves front office to the test.
