Dlo on the JJ Reddick Podcast

Post by kekgeek »

I thought it was a great listen about 40 minutes of your time. In the interview he mentioned he has been talking to the coaches to figure out how he can get better at D. He says he refuses to be the guy who gets singled out of defense like Micheal Porter Jr has been

Thanks for posting Kek. I haven't listened to it, but we've heard from notoriously poor defenders in the past about their desire to get better and they rarely do. I don't buy it. Show you care on that end first. Beasley isn't a good defender either, but at least he tries hard. I think he may be more coach-able on that end.

Bottom like is that if we expect a KAT-DLO-Beasley trio to take us into the playoffs, they will need 1st or 2nd All-NBA-caliber defenders at the two other positions.

A agree completely, Q. I do see Beasley improving defensively just based on his intensity and effort. He will ultimately will himself to become a decent defender. Remember he's still really young. As for KAT and DLO, I'll believe it when I see it. But I'm skeptical.

I'm looking forward to listening to the podcast. If DLO is talking the talk, maybe he'll walk the walk too.

I want to say i don't think Dlo came off bad when you listen to it. He didn't come off saying he will become an elite defender he was just saying that he needs to find a way to not be put into every PnR

Also he said after Kat mom died he has become a killer. Totally different attitude. Now Kat has been a lot of talk over the years but we'll see what happens

Also i would say probably the most notable thing in the interview was JJ Reddick told a story about Rosas.

JJ knew he was going to go to the pelicans. Rosas had a pitch set up for JJ to sign with the wolves. JJ already had a deal in place with the pelicans. Rosas asked if he could still send the pitch. JJ said it was by far the best pitch and meaningful things he had ever received as a pro.

At least there is good feelings with Rosas out there

This wasn't anything too amazing but I enjoyed it and glad it was posted! The one other interesting thing that hasn't been mentioned was what young player in the playoffs Russell said said he would pick to start a franchise. Weird nobody mentioned Luka in that conversation but to be fair there are a lot of young guys stepping up in the playoffs already.

I see D'Lo and KAT went to the same school of speaking something into nonexistence.

Yes, confidence even cockiness or absolute knowing is the key. Even if you are considered delusional by most, you have to trick yourself into believing it first.

"I'm going to try and be a good defender this season." = Not happening

"I'm going to try and not be the weakest link on defense." = LOL, Not happening

"I'm going to be the best defender in the league at my position" = Possible if unlikely but would likely see some of not a lot of improvement.

"We are going to make the playoffs this season." = Possible

"I hope we make the playoffs this year." = Not happening

It might sound cocky to some people, but nice guys finish last for a reason. Who cares if it might sound outlandish or delusional, Mentality is key.

D-Lo could say basically anything and the fans that didn't support the trade for him would pick it apart regardless. The best thing for him to do is to show out this next season.

Just listened to the podcast.

I thought Russell was great. He's obviously smart and personable. And of course, I like what he said about KAT as well as what he said about where he's at mentally. While I'm skeptical of Russell, I'm not going to totally dismiss what he says. In fact, I'd be worried if he wasn't saying the things he said in this Podcast. Sometimes, declaring to others what you're going to do makes doing it more likely.

I'll remind my fellow Russell skeptics that he's still only 24 years old and has been knocked around a bit since coming to the League as the 2nd overall pick in 2016. The situation he was thrown into in LA was really tough with the high expectations, the LA spotlight, the Kobe farewell and the general disfunction on the Lakers at the time. It's noteworthy that he responded positively when traded to the Nets, making the all-star team in his second season there. The Warriors situation was another strange situation with Thompson and Curry going down and Iggy gone. Granted, a superstar would have likely taken the Warriors to a better record. Obviously, Russell wasn't up to it, but he was 23 years old and also had his own injury issues.

Yes, Russell has a lot to work on. He's a poor defender, turns the ball over too much and still fails to show a consistent level of high intensity on the court. Then there's the goofy side to him that makes you wonder how seriously focused he is on winning. That said, he's an all-star talent who has already produced one season at an all-star level. He's young and likely has more untapped upside that he can progress towards in tandem with the Wolves other 24 year old all-star. So I like what Russell said and although I'll remain skeptical, I won't be cynical about it either. I'm looking forward to seeing what Russell, KAT and Beasley become as they progress together over the next several years - assuming Beasley is re-signed. And imagine adding the next Bam Adebayo to that trio. I'm talking about Okongwu over course. :)
