Why? Is backup PG defense a huge necessity to winning games across the league? No. This Tyus' key to success is defense narrative is crap. Nash couldn't play a lick of defense. Neither could Curry for a long time either. Lawson is not a good defender. Lillard, Parker and Irving aren't good defenders. All those guys are starters and they have sucked or still do suck on defense. You don't have to be a good defender to be a good NBA player. Tyus is not going to be a good defender. His physical profile compared to his opponents pretty much will never allow it. He can however become a guy who can be a very good PnR threat if he can get his shot down consistently which would instantly make him a good option as an NBA PG. He's never going to be an above average defender so that isn't his key to being a successful player in the league.

Whoa, settle down Khans. Why so angry all the time dude?

While I certainly don't think he needs to be a lock down defender, I think he has to at least be passable. The guys you mention are mostly tour de forces offensively and many have improved quite a bit defensively.

Game Report Tyus Jones D-league debut

I watched nearly all the game last night I missed a couple minutes but saw 90percent of the game. Here are my observations. You can watch the game on YouTube

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RA8C3c8fECg&sns=em

It's the D-league blah blah blah. I don't care Tyus comes in starts as a 19 year old and was doing exactly the stuff he has been doing all his life. Offensively his feel for the game and skills are impressive. He makes passes that are impressive for a PG. he blew past a SG like it was nothing. He was getting off that jumper easy. Later in the game they went with a 3 guard lineup and so Tyus was going against bigger players and had no problem there either. I know hummer is tearing it up Heslip was going bonkers and this was one game but it was an impressive array of offensive skills.

Defense. He showed a lot of his sort of lazy D early on giving up on plays when beaten and generally looking pretty bad. The difference between him and pressed (who makes Tyus look like a giant PG) was massive. As the game went on it got better. He plays as a team defender a lot cheating off guys and you can see he has instincts to do that. At some point in the 2nd half he was playing much more aggressive D getting up on guys and if beaten stayed in the play or making a rotation. They switched a lot and Tyus was clearly communicating well putting up his hand for the switch etc. his activity level keep going up which probably was obvious since he ended up with a nice rebound total.

I'll go out on a limb here and this isn't just based on this one d-league game but it's all about whether if Tyus can defend at any decent level. His offensive skills show enough potential to be a starting level PG.

Other thoughts.

Tabor is an interesting prospect as a 7'3" guy with a jumper. Utah might have something there.

Brandon Fields and Lorenzo Brown must have been a fun combo to watch when they were together. He must feel like he is on the cusp of breaking I to the NBA or something because he probably could make a lot of cash playing overseas. When it was Tyus Pressey and Fields in all at the same time that was some fun stuff. Lol

There was some other solid looking players but now that it's been almost a days since I watched...ah never mind nobody probably cares anyway. Lol

Ok honestly now -- The Cavs call and want Tyus. The Offer Cedi Osman and Rakeem Christmas. You'd turn that down?

good article - I am gad he is getting minutes down there. The Jazz don't have any reason to play him, but if they like him I would be all for a Kevin Martin/Tyus Jones for Alec Burk trade.

Interesting stuff I had heard of Jack Taylor partly because my cousin played against Grinnell College. I want to say one year they were somewhat proud to hold them under 100 points or something in a loss. Lol

Not as good a game last night for Tyus (15-4-4), but in all fairness, he is playing on a bad team than limits his assist totals. He still looked pretty good to me...surprisingly athletic. And as Monster said, this D-League play is pretty decent. It's not Summer League...there is evidence of coaching and defense here!

One observation: I'm sure Tyus hasn't played in front of such small crowds since 7th grade traveling basketball! He regularly saw crowds of 15,000 at Duke and there was always a full house at Apple Valley. A lot of empty seats in Boise last night.

He was launching some three pointers last night (eight total). Here's full box:

Tyus dropped another 22 in his third d-league game. Here's the box:

http://dleague.nba.com/games/20151212/bakida/

So after three games, he's averaging:
21 points, 5 assists, 4.33 rebounds and 1.67 steals a game. His PER is 19.32. Nice to see him playing well down there. The 21 points/game is team leading with the next closest being Brandon Fields at 16.7 points/game (Fields has played 14 games - Tyus only 3).

I'm surprised with how much he's shooting and scoring, as I always thought of him as more of a facilitator first and foremost, and a scorer just when he really needed to be. But it's the D-League and they may be encouraging him to be aggressive with his shot. I can't complain.
